Buggies are not considered essential items for families arriving in Scotland. We pass on between 30-40 buggies every month to recently arrived families.

Right now we have almost 30 families in need of newborn, double or single prams and pushchairs. If you have one that is in good working order and that you’d like to pass on to a very appreciative recently arrived family please get in touch with [email protected].

Please note that for each buggy there are usually four points of contact - donor, partner organisation, interpreter, family and we only have ONE Hannah (and we’d really like to keep her!) Your patience and understanding with the matching and drop off process is massively appreciated.

Thanks for making a difference with us!

The Beyond Sleep Training Project

Our top tips for getting your head around and accepting normal infant sleep for new and expecting mamas

1. Expect that your baby will wake A LOT and want to nurse back to sleep most times throughout the first year and beyond.

2. Even if your baby starts sleeping longer… Expect it not to last.

3. Expect there to be times when your baby will be super hard to settle and may be impossible to put down. Embrace the beauty of contact napping and the enforced rest it brings or look into your local babywearing group to find a carrier or wrap that enables you to keep moving and hands-free.

4. Expect that your baby will sometimes catnap during the day (20 - 40minutes) and that may be all they need at that time. If they are hard to settle within 15 minutes, it's okay to stop and try again later.

5. Expect that at times, you will need to call in back-up support to help you get the rest you need while meeting the night time needs of your baby.

6. Expect that you may need to consider some sleeping arrangements that you may not see as your ideal situation (e.g. bedsharing when you really wanted a cot sleeper).

7. Expect that your baby will want to sleep on the boob and not let go at times. This is normal and not a sleep or supply problem.

8. Expect that in a few short years, it is a long forgotten stress and all you miss is all the cuddles, nursing and closeness.

Expect these things and then, if it turns out your baby finds sleep more easily than this...winner, winner, chicken dinner! Realistic expectations (even if you consider them low expectations) make it so much easier to mentally to prepare, surrender and make peace with your baby’s sleep behaviour. Your baby is so much more than their ability to sleep. Expect little in the way of sleep and enjoy them for the whole person they are 💙😴👍🏻

#safersleepweek starts today! This year we’re going to be focusing on co-sleeping. We want to help parents make informed choices about sharing a bed with their baby and advise them on how to do so more safely.

Whether you plan to share a bed with your baby or there is a chance of it happening unplanned, it’s important to make your bed safe for your baby.

We’ve created this brand new animation to show how to make sharing a bed with your baby as safe as possible.

Are you thinking of weaning your baby?

Our free Messy Munchers session gives you the information to support a happy, healthy weaning experience.

For more info email the Dietetic Health Promotion Team at [email protected].

Whitelee Countryside Rangers

Dog owners/walkers visiting Whitelee - please be aware there will be movements of sheep to and from Lochgoin Farm in the coming weeks as the ewes are moved so they can be scanned to find out if they are pregnant, and then those with lambs separated off.

Movement of the sheep from the grazing area is usually along the 3rd array road (from the visitor centre) with turbines 11, 26 and 42 on it.

Please keep your dog within sight or to be on the safe side, keep it on a lead at this time when in this area or the grazing area (denoted by the cattle grids to enter/exit).

Allowing your dog(s) or dogs in your care (if a commercial dog walker) to chase sheep could result in the loss of the dog and criminal charges, and can cause ewes to miscarry - so please don't take the chance.

Chickenpox is going around again! Please remember NOT to give your children nurofen/ibuprofen if you think your child has it. This type of medicine is an anti-inflammatory. It reacts with the chickenpox making them go deeper into the skin tissue, potentially causing a more severe secondary infection.
Better options: 👶Paracetamol for fever 👶Calamine Lotion for the itch 👶Keep your child hydrated
Always seek medical advice.

A bit about massage oils

There is a lot of conflicting and interesting research on what is appropriate to use on a baby’s skin. Further investigation, clearer advice and more studies are required. In terms of massage these are my recommendations in light of the current studies;

It is best to avoid the use of oils on the skin until baby is at least one month old.

On current advice, olive oil and sunflower oil should be avoided on new born skin (under four weeks old).

Coconut oil appears to be suitable for massage based on its chemical make up but within the parameters set above, (although no study has been conducted on its use)

Although sunflower oil is not suitable for new born baby’s skin, no study has been done on its suitability for babies older than 4-6 weeks. After 6 weeks the skin has matured and sunflower oil could be used.

Avoid essential oils for massage with babies under three months and then only with supervision from an aromatherapist.

Always do a patch test on oils on a baby’s skin.
Baby massage is best practised from 8 weeks although skin to skin is encouraged from birth.

Traditionally natural vegetable based oils have been used for baby massage for hundreds of years. Further research needs to be done to determine when and what oil is suitable for baby’s skin at each stage.
