William S. Burroughs lived a life that most would find impossible to navigate. He was a Harvard-educated scion of a wealthy family who became a fugitive, a writer of banned books, and a central figure of the Beat Generation. Despite his chaotic reality, he often appeared in public dressed like a stern, conservative mid-century accountant. This juxtaposition was intentional. He understood that in a world obsessed with control and observation, the most radical act of rebellion is to simply exist outside of the system's gaze.

As he famously noted: There is nothing more provocative than minding your own business.

Burroughs wasn't just talking about politeness. He was talking about psychic independence. To mind your own business is to refuse to participate in the collective drama, to reject the urge to police others, and to reclaim the energy usually spent on social performance. In an era where every moment is curated for public consumption, silence and privacy have become the ultimate forms of subversion.
