Caring Cuts by Grace

You may remember my previous post (below) about Sam written by his lovely Mum….

Well today I visited Sam and he ABSOLUTELY SMASHED his haircut! He is now the proud owner of an adorable baby mullet which he absolutely ROCKS! Sam was still very wriggly and it was definitely an ‘on the move’ haircut… but he was sooooo chill and just happily played with the toys and wandered about calmly whilst I followed him about and cut his hair! ‘Sam is 2 years old and he has extreme sensory sensitivity. Brushing his hair is quite uncomfortable for him too. In fact, anything to do with his hair was always a no go!
His first haircut, done about a year ago at the barbers, was traumatic for everyone.
He screamed the entire time and we couldn’t get him to cooperate in any sort of way whatsoever!
After that, as soon as he sensed someone going near his hair with scissors or anything that looked like it, it led to him immediately running away and crying and doing anything to get out of doing it.
On the first appointment with Grace, we realised that having fidget toys, and having that ability to move around helped massively. He still cried on and off, and was very apprehensive, but by the end of it he was doing great.
Then on the next appointment, Sam didn’t even cry and he even sat still for the first 15 minutes! Again, playing with fidget toys, and counting the amount of times he’d have the clippers used or his hair being cut with scissors worked really well for him. It was a much more positive experience!’

Sorry for the silence on socials! I’ve been so super busy with lots of back to school cuts and trying to squeeze everyone in that I haven’t had any time to post!

So just a quick one today…. Here’s the lovely Noah looking smart after his back to school cut…
Noah also had to have his first little facial hair tidy up this time round because he’s now 13 and the chin fluff was fluffing!! (Swipe for the before pics)

Jamie is such a little trooper… this little boy has been through so much more than the average person would go through in their whole life… and yet he’s still full of smiles!
Jamie is super strong and so is his lovely mum Carla Crumpler who is always right by his side to support him no matter what… after another recent scare and hospital admission I just wanted to give him a little shout out because he really is a star 🌟

I’ve been cutting Eiden’s hair for some time now, and I always look forward to catching up with him and his lovely mum and hearing about all the adventures he’s been on! ❤️
Eiden lives a FULL and wonderfully adventurous life. Kayaking, horse riding, bike riding, paddleboarding, festivals… you name it, this tiny teenager has probably done it! 😂
And because there’s always another adventure waiting around the corner, Eiden’s haircuts need to be quick! Not only because he’s usually got somewhere exciting to be, but also because haircuts aren’t exactly his favourite activity! 😅
Eiden experiences quite a lot of sensory sensitivity during his haircuts, particularly around his neck and ears. His mum is amazing at supporting and reassuring him throughout the process.
We work quickly, we adapt, and we go with what Eiden can manage on the day. He moves his head quite a lot during his haircut, which can make getting everything perfectly even pretty tricky!
But actually… haircut perfection isn’t the goal here❤️
We keep the back and sides nice and short to help him stay cool, especially in the warmer weather. But right at the front, we leave some super-long pieces of hair because Eiden finds comfort in twiddling them. Cutting these short would take away something that helps him regulate and could leave him distressed.
And those things are far more important than following a particular style or achieving a “perfect” finish.
So yes, sometimes Eiden’s haircut is a little imperfect.
But it’s perfectly adapted to him.
It works for him. It keeps him comfortable. It respects his sensory needs. And most importantly, he absolutely ROCKS it! 🥰✂️
This is what adaptive barbering is all about — not changing the person to fit the haircut, but changing the haircut to fit the person. ❤️

Meet Theo! Theo NEVER STOPS MOVING!!!!
This little boy is literally joy in toddler form…. He jumps, he runs, he squeals with delight and he LOVES BUBBLES! 🫧
When I say he is always on the move I mean always 🤣 He’s quick on his feet and he’s also not a massive fan of haircuts but together we muddle through… we whizz around the lounge, we play with EVERYTHING, we cut hair in counts of 3 and then we follow each count of 3 with some bubble fun!!
I ALWAYS leave sweaty, but I always leave Theo happy and not distressed which is the most important thing…. He is excited when I come to ‘play’, and despite the haircut he is always still my little buddy by the time I leave :) Leanne Poore
