Today is World Environment Day. The theme is land restoration.
This footage is deforestation, most of it driven by palm oil. It's in food, cosmetics, and cleaning products. It's in most commercial soap.
We don't use it. Not because we found a certified sustainable source, we don't trust that certification. The demand exists and the land pays for it regardless of what the label says.
We feel the same about sustainable soy wax. The designation doesn't undo the land use behind it. Which is why our candle vessels are filled with rapeseed and coconut wax instead.
Everything we use is traceable. Our oils, our clays, our waxes, our Jesmonite. We're a small studio in Brighton making things in small batches. We can afford to be careful because we're not making it at scale.

Love Mother Nature 🌿

Excited to share that Earth Botanicals is now stocking at Willow and Rose in Somerton, Somerset.
You'll find our Jesmonite soap dishes in store — handcast in Brighton from a water-based mineral composite, with built-in drainage to keep your bar dry between washes. The White Marble and Charcoal Black are both available in the shop.
If you're in Somerset it's worth a visit. A beautiful independent that curates with real care.
Thank you for having us, Willow and Rose.

This is Beltane.
The first of the five elemental candles. Cast in old terracotta Jesmonite, the same material as the soap dishes.
Inside: a rapeseed and coconut wax blend scented with sweet orange, black pepper, cedarwood and cinnamon leaf. Warm without being heavy. Woody without being dark.
The vessel is refillable. When the wax is gone the Jesmonite stays. Clean it out and order a refill. It's made to last because the material lasts.
Four more coming. One for each element.
Not available yet, but soon!

Really glad to share that our Old Terracotta soap dish is now stocking at Handmade Design in Ashbourne.
Handmade in Brighton, now finding its home a little further north.
If you're in the area, go and see it in person - Jesmonite is one of those materials that needs to be held to be understood. It's so tactile.

Today is World Bee Day.
That's a bumblebee on what looks a lot like a calendula, but it isn't actually Calendula 😅
Calendula flowers long after most plants have stopped. Bees know this and return to it again and again into autumn when the rest of the garden has given up. It's one of those plants that just keeps giving.
It's in the Marigold soap bar - organic calendula extract and crushed petals - partly for what it does for skin, partly because a plant that works that hard deserves to be used with intention.
No bees. No botanicals. No Earth Botanicals.

The active layer | beyond the base oils.
Every soap bar we make is superfatted. Here's what that means and why it matters.
During saponification (the process that turns oils into soap), lye converts most of the oils into cleanser. Superfatting means we deliberately leave a percentage unconverted. Those free oils stay in the bar and go directly onto your skin.
The oils we use for the superfat aren't fillers. Moringa is rich in oleic acid and absorbs quickly without residue. Black cumin seed has been used on skin for centuries - anti-inflammatory and deeply conditioning. Tomato seed brings antioxidant properties. Camellia tea seed is lightweight and softening. Rosehip is known for its effect on skin tone and texture.
None of this survives in a commercial bar. The glycerin is removed - the superfat isn't there. What's left cleans but doesn't nourish.
Ours does both. 🌿

A gentle almanac | May
I've spent the last two weeks invigilating exams, silent rooms and other people's concentration. The hawthorn was in full blossom when I walked in on the first day. By the time I came out it had already started to fall.
So the almanac is late this month and I've decided that's fine. Beltane has passed, the Morris dancers have packed away their bells and the elderflower is already doing what it wants in the hedgerows.
Moons, tides, what's in the kitchen, a hawthorn blossom facial steam you can still make this week if you move quickly and the old story of May Morning.
The month isn't over yet 🦋

White Marble dish and tray | from the Air collection.
Cast in Jesmonite, a water-based mineral composite and finished in a clean chalk white. The drainage tray sits beneath to keep your bar dry between washes.
Made to last and to be looked at every day!

Part of the Earth Botanicals homeware collection - five colourways, each named for the landscape it came from.

Marigold soap bar | scent profile
It opens with the sharp brightness of lime before basil brings a cool herbal softness to the heart. Red mandarin rounds the blend - warm, slightly resinous, with a depth that settles on the skin and lingers.

Inside the bar: organic calendula extract and crushed marigold petals. Calendula has been used on skin for centuries - gently anti-inflammatory, softening, suited to skin that needs a little care.

Cold process. Small batch. Made in Brighton.
