⚠️Warning ⚠️ *Some* shampoo bars aren’t what they seem. Some are really soaps masquerading as shampoo bars 🫤

Soaps are lovely on the skin, but they aren’t usually the right pH level for hair. Which is why soap can feel weird to wash your hair with.

I had a query from someone asking for advice:

“Hi there! My hair is having a horrible time after I washed it yesterday with a sodium cocoate/olivate based bar, it’s straw-dry & waxy to touch, & shedding a LOT when I try to brush it. I’d like to buy your herbal bar asap, but I saw in a review that it leaves a ‘film’ on the hair - what does this mean?”

If a ‘shampoo bar’ has sodium cocoate/olivate in the ingredients list (ours don’t) it is actually a soap, made with oils that are saponified with lye. Maybe it has some hair-friendly ingredients in it but it’s not going to be a true shampoo that’s solid (like ours is). Which would explain the reaction their hair had.

For some people our shampoo bars can sometimes leave a ‘film’ because of the moisturising ingredients in the bar. The moisturisers are very good for hair that’s prone to dryness, like wavy/curly hair, or for people who don’t tend to use a conditioner after shampooing. The film certainly works for me and my naughty hair but it’s not for everyone.

But if you’d rather avoid any feeling of residue or film at all, I’d recommend trying our Shampoo Concentrate which is totally oil free.

Both types of our shampoo are sulfate free which means they won’t remove all of the natural oil from your hair – which is a good thing as it’s there to protect it and keep it healthy!

I always recommend trying samples before committing to any of our products. I love to give out advice (ask any time!) but the only way you can ever be ABSOLUTELY 100% sure about whether you’ll love a product or not is to just give it a go and see what your hair says.

🎁 Festive shopping dates! 🎁

Keeping things hyper local and Bristol-based this year! Looking forward to trading at some cool and beautiful venues over the next few weeks, packed with lots of interesting indie businesses to shop with.

🎁 I’m back tomorrow with my pals , (seems I just can’t get enough of the earring queens!) and at their festive open studio in Old Market, with guesting with me again 🙌There are more open studio dates in their calendar, too. Expect COLOUR 😆

🎁 Then I’m doing all 3 dates (all Saturdays) for in the gorgeous (and huge)

🎁 There’s the first in taproom on the 30th. The lineup for that one has quite a few of my personal faves on it too

🎁 If you prefer to shop in a shop rather than at a Christmas market, you’ll find a selection of our gift in in Cabot Circus and in the old almshouse in The Galleries

🎁 There are a few spaces left for the workshops that I run in my studio in Totterdown. Which make a really fun gift in themselves! I also have a little retail shelf in my studio for browsing that’s stocked with lovely-smelling gifts.

🎁 And of course my website is always open, 24-7. I have a collection point that’s also accessible 24-7 outside the studio in the form of yellow lockers. If you choose local collection at the checkout (which is free) I’ll email you a unique code that lets you into the locker to collect when you’re ready 🔑

Shop small, shop indie, shop local to you — don’t line the pockets of businesses that are up to no good 👀

🧼 A thing to remember:

shampoo + water + friction = BUBBLES 🫧

Meaning if your shampoo bar isn’t lathering how you’d like it to — add either water or more friction.

Either wet your hair a little bit more OR rinse the 1st shampoo out and do another shampoo with the teeniest bit of shampoo.

Use your hair line rather than the palms of your hands get the lather going. Hair has a slightly rougher surface than skin so it’ll create more friction.

Hello, let’s talk FRAGRANCE. Specifically for hair, and even more specifically, for conditioner for your hair.

I’ve just released the newest addition to the range called Conditioner Base which is fragrance free.

It’s designed to be a very simple conditioner that you can either leave plain, or customise and add your own fragrance or enrich with plant oils. A bit like adding your own fruit and honey to your natural yoghurt to get it just how you like it 👌

Because freedom of choice is always good! And we’re all different. Which team are you when it comes to conditioner smells?

🌱 Rosemary hair oil has being talked about online quite a lot lately and I was quizzed a bit about it quite a bit at one of last years workshops. There are Tiktokers who absolutely swear by it for hair growth, but sometimes it’s hard to tell if something is a just fad or the real deal.

Well, the good news is that rosemary essential oil has actually been proven to help keep the scalp healthy. It strengthens circulation and increases blood flow to the follicles which leads to less hair loss. And in turn, longer hair.

When used on the scalp, rosemary oil’s anti-inflammatory properties reduce irritation, dandruff, and itching. This means a much better environment for healthy hair growth.

Which is why I always recommend our Herbal shampoo bar to anyone who might be struggling with their scalp. The Herbal blend is made up of Rosemary, Lavender and Clary Sage, all of which are great essential oils, specifically for the scalp.

For a quick at-home scalp treatment, mix 20-30 drops of rosemary essential oil into 100ml of one of the carrier oils we sell in the DIY section on our website. Argan, fractionated coconut or olive oil for example. Massage your mixed rosemary hair oil into your scalp and hair, leave for at least 20 mins and then wash it all out. Repeat weekly.

Note: while rosemary is great for hair growth, it’s by no means a cure for hair loss. Hair loss can be slowed down but unfortunately it can’t be completely prevented.

🌱 I’d be interested to hear if you’ve tried rosemary essential oil for growth?

A side-by-side comparison guide for our two types of shampoo. Have you tried them both, how do you think they compare? 🤔

(If you haven’t but you’re curious they’re both available in sample sizes 😉)
