A little advice for new locs 🌿

When your locs are freshly created, try not to mess with them too much. They need time to settle and start doing their thing.

After washing, gently separate your locs at the roots so they don’t start joining together, then palm roll them while they’re still slightly damp. Don’t go mad with it though, constant rolling and twisting can put unnecessary stress on the hair.

How often you wash really depends on your scalp, lifestyle and hair. Some people need to wash every week, others can comfortably go longer. The important bit is keeping your scalp clean and making sure your locs dry properly afterwards.

Personally, I hardly washed mine at all in the early stages and they’re forming really well, but that’s what worked for my hair and scalp. There isn’t one magic routine that works for everyone.

Clean scalp, minimal products, separate when needed, palm roll if you want a neater shape, and then mostly just leave them alone to loc.

Price list. Looks complicated but isnt so bad. Cheapest in the area without skimping on quality work. Can do split payments.

ROOTED & TWISTED LOCDOC

Books are open! From friday this week!!

Whether you want to try locs without the commitment, start your permanent loc journey, or give the locs you already have some much-needed attention, here's what I offer:

Braid-in locs
Get the loc look without making it permanent. Braid-ins are installed into your natural hair and can be removed again, making them perfect for festivals, holidays, events or just because you fancy a change.
Braiding is a newer addition to my services, so my prices are currently a little lower than some others in the area while I build my portfolio. That isn't a reflection of the standard of my work. The sets I've done so far have turned out really well and I'm confident in what I offer. I'd just rather be transparent about my experience and price accordingly than pretend I've been doing something for years when I haven't.

Loc bobbles, clips & removable pieces
If you don't even want the commitment of braid-ins, I also make removable loc pieces. Pop them in for a night out, festival or event and take them straight back out afterwards. An easy way to completely change up your hair whenever you feel like it.

Permanent loc creation
Ready to start your actual loc journey? I create permanent crochet locs from your natural hair and can talk you through the process, maintenance and aftercare as your locs mature. Every head is different, so we'll work out what suits your hair and the look you're going for.

Loc maintenance & care
Regrowth, loose hair, fluffy locs, overdue maintenance... bring it all. I offer crochet maintenance to tidy, strengthen and look after established locs without making them look unnaturally perfect. They're locs. They're allowed some personality.

LocDoc repairs
Lost a loc? Snapped one? Weak spots or damage? Don't throw the bloody thing away 😂 If it can be saved or reattached, I'll do my best to get it back where it belongs. I can also repair and strengthen damaged areas before they become a bigger problem.

And please don't ever be embarrassed about bringing me locs that haven't been maintained for ages. That's literally what the LocDoc is here for.

Halloween appointments are now open too, so if you've been thinking about getting something a little darker, wilder or more unusual for spooky season, now's a good time to get booked in.

Message Rooted & Twisted LocDoc for appointments, prices or just to have a chat about what you'd like.

So so true. Fantastic loc artist.

A little bit of a different look for me at the moment 🖤

After wearing dreads/waves pretty much constantly for a long time, I’ve decided to give my hair — and more importantly my body — a proper break.

I’ve been struggling with a lot of pain through my neck, shoulders and upper back lately, and I realised that the extra weight of my hair, especially when I wore it tied up, really wasn’t helping. Since taking them out I’ve noticed a difference, so for now… normal hair Claire is making an appearance 😂

As much as I absolutely LOVE dreads (obviously 🤣), sometimes you have to listen to what your body is telling you instead of just pushing through.

For a lot of us, dreads aren’t just a hairstyle — they’re part of our identity and our lifestyle. And because we love them so much, it can be really easy to keep reinstalling, keep wearing them up, keep adding weight and just assume our bodies will cope with it forever.

But part of having this lifestyle should also be knowing when to give yourself a break.

Pay attention to tension on your scalp, headaches, neck ache, shoulder pain, posture changes, or that general feeling that something just isn’t quite right. You don’t have to wait until you’re in loads of pain before taking them out. Wearing dreads should feel good — it shouldn’t be something you’re forcing your body to tolerate.

We’re very good at ignoring little warning signs, especially when we’re busy looking after everyone else, working, running businesses, being mums, and generally trying to keep life moving. But looking after yourself isn’t being dramatic or giving up something you love — sometimes it’s just recognising that your body needs a bit of kindness too.

So I’m giving my scalp, hair, neck and back some breathing space, having a little trim and some TLC, and I’ll see how I feel from there 🖤

The dreads aren’t gone forever… I mean, come on, have you met me? 😂

Just a little reminder from your temporarily dreadless dread lady: listen to your body. Take breaks when you need them, don’t over-wear your dreads, and remember that looking after the person underneath the hair is just as important as the hair itself. 🖤
