This lecture genuinely challenged the way I think about obesity.💚☘️

Years ago, as a personal trainer, I used to wonder why two clients could follow very similar plans, yet achieve completely different results.

At the time, I didn’t have the scientific understanding I have today.

One of the biggest lessons from my Nutrition Science studies is that obesity is far more complex than simply eating less and moving more. Our biology, brain, gut, hormones, genetics, environment and appetite regulation all interact to influence body weight.

Perhaps the biggest lightbulb moment for me was understanding why maintaining weight loss can be even harder than losing it. The body doesn’t simply “reset” after weight loss it adapts, often increasing hunger and conserving energy, making long term maintenance more challenging for many people.

This doesn’t mean healthy lifestyle choices aren’t important they absolutely are. But it does remind us that supporting someone living with obesity requires far more than telling them to “try harder.”

Another powerful takeaway was the impact of weight stigma. Research shows that judgement and bias can affect not only people’s wellbeing but also their willingness to seek healthcare and the quality of care they receive.

As healthcare and wellness professionals, our words matter. As individuals, our understanding matters.

The more we learn, the more we realise that compassion and evidence should always go hand in hand.

📖 Current read: Menopause and ADHD: How to Navigate Hormone Flux and Neurodivergence by Dr Helen Wall.

Some books arrive at exactly the right time🙏

As an evidence based menopause practitioner, I’m always looking to deepen my understanding so I can better support the women I work with. But this book also feels personal.

Over the years, I’ve listened to countless women describe feeling overwhelmed, unable to concentrate, more forgetful, emotionally reactive, or as though they’ve somehow “lost themselves” during perimenopause and menopause. Increasingly, researchers and clinicians are exploring how hormonal changes may interact with ADHD traits and why some women are only recognised or diagnosed later in life.

I’ll be honest, I have found myself wondering about this too. Not from a place of self diagnosis, but from curiosity, reflection, and a desire to understand the growing evidence.

Written by Dr Helen Wall, a GP, menopause specialist, and public health leader in Greater Manchester, this book aims to bridge the gap between healthcare professionals and accessible, evidence informed advice for the public. It explores how hormonal changes may influence ADHD symptoms and offers practical guidance for women navigating both.

As I read through each chapter, I’ll be sharing some of the insights that stand out to me not as definitive answers, but as conversations grounded in curiosity, evidence, and lived experience.

If you’re a woman who’s ever wondered “Is this menopause… ADHD… or both?”, I hope you’ll come along on this learning journey with me.☘️💚

Have you read this book yet, or is it on your reading list?

🍭 STOP BLAMING YOUR SKIN… it might be your sugar intake.

Your skin often reflects what’s happening inside your body.

A diet consistently high in added sugars and ultra processed foods may contribute to:
☘️Increased inflammation
☘️More frequent breakouts
☘️Duller looking skin
☘️Faster collagen breakdown (through a process called glycation, where excess sugar binds to collagen and elastin, making them stiffer and less flexible)
☘️Fine lines and loss of skin elasticity over time

This doesn’t mean you can never enjoy a treat. It’s about your overall dietary pattern, not perfection. Small, sustainable changes can benefit both your skin and your long term health.

As a Skin Specialist with advanced training in skin health, and while studying MNU Advanced Nutrition Science, I take a whole body approach. Healthy skin isn’t just about what you apply to your face, it’s also influenced by nutrition, lifestyle, hormones, sleep and stress.

💬 If you’re struggling with acne, rosacea, pigmentation, sensitive skin or premature ageing, DM me to book a Skin & Nutrition Consultation. Together we’ll look at the bigger picture and create a personalised plan for your skin goals.

⚠️ Please note:
• Every new skin client requires a thorough consultation.
• A patch test is required where appropriate before certain treatments.
• No two skins are the same, which is why personalised advice is so important.

✨ Your pelvic floor deserves more than just Kegels.

Pelvic floor health is influenced by so much more than we often realise. Nutrition, movement, breathing, strength, stress management, sleep, bowel habits and hydration all play a role in supporting this incredible group of muscles.

As a Personal Trainer, Menopause Practitioner, Skin Specialist and MNU Nutrition Science student, I’m passionate about helping women understand how lifestyle and nutrition can support their health through perimenopause and beyond.

But sometimes, the best step is seeing a specialist.

I’ve personally seen Asma Pelvicare | Asma Sethi , an excellent pelvic floor physiotherapist who has helped me enormously, and I can’t recommend her highly enough. If you’re experiencing leaking, heaviness, pain, prolapse symptoms or simply want reassurance that everything is functioning well, don’t wait getting assessed by a pelvic floor specialist can make a huge difference.

If you’d like support with the nutrition, movement and lifestyle side of pelvic floor and menopause health, DM me to book your private Nutrition & Menopause Consultation. Together we’ll create practical strategies to support your body from the inside out. 💚

✨ One of my favourite topics from this week’s MNU lecture was the role of omega-3s in Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS), now increasingly being recognised by many experts as Poly Endocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS).

This perfectly highlights why I’m so passionate about continuing my education. As a skin specialist, I don’t just look at what’s happening on the surface I want to understand why it’s happening.

Many women with PCOS/PMOS experience concerns such as acne, oily skin and inflammation. Nutrition plays an important role in supporting overall health, and omega-3 fats are one area backed by growing evidence.

Omega-3-rich foods, including oily fish, chia seeds and walnuts, may help support:
🐟 Healthy inflammatory balance
✨ Skin barrier function and hydration
🩸 Insulin sensitivity and metabolic health
🧠 Brain and heart health
🌸 Healthy ageing and healthy skin from the inside out

Although omega-3s aren’t a treatment for PCOS/PMOS, including them regularly as part of a balanced diet may help support both metabolic health and skin health.

One of the reasons I love studying with MNU is that it allows me to bring the latest evidence into my clinic, combining skin treatments with nutrition, hormone education and lifestyle support. That’s where I believe the best long term results happen.

💌 DM me “SKIN” to book a personalised Skin & Nutrition Consultation, or DM “PCOS” if you’d like to discuss how nutrition and lifestyle can support your skin and overall wellbeing alongside PCOS/PMOS.☘️💚

☀️ With the warmer weather here, hydration deserves a little extra attention.

One of the most valuable lectures in my MNU nutrition studies was on hydration, taught by our tutor, Sarah. It was a great reminder that staying hydrated isn’t just about drinking more water when you’re thirsty, it’s about creating consistent daily habits that support your health.

One tip that really stuck with me was using the colour of your urine as a simple hydration check. Aim for a pale, straw-like colour, which generally suggests you’re well hydrated.

Simple habits can make a big difference:
💧 Sip water consistently throughout the day.
💧 Keep a reusable water bottle with you wherever you go.

Good hydration supports energy, concentration, exercise performance, digestion, healthy skin, and many of the body’s everyday functions. Especially during the summer months, these small habits can have a big impact.

✨ MICRONEEDLING ✨

One of the most effective treatments for improving skin texture, firmness, and overall skin health.

Microneedling works by creating controlled micro channels within the skin, stimulating your body’s natural healing response and encouraging the production of collagen and elastin, the proteins responsible for keeping skin firm, smooth, and youthful.

🌿 Benefits include:

✔ Fine lines and wrinkles
✔ Acne scarring
✔ Enlarged pores
✔ Uneven skin texture
✔ Stretch marks
✔ Dull, tired looking skin

Following treatment, it is normal to experience redness, warmth, and mild tightness for up to 24 hours, similar to a mild sunburn.

At Scullion Skin Clinic, this is not a “one-size-fits-all” beauty facial. Every client receives a professional assessment to ensure the treatment is appropriate for their skin concerns and goals.

📋 First-time clients must book a Skin Consultation before any advanced facial treatment. This allows me to assess your skin, review any contraindications, and create a personalised treatment plan. A patch test may also be required.

📩 Private message to book your consultation or to find out if Microneedling is right for you.☘️💚

✨ Appreciate Your Food ✨

In our busy lives, it’s easy to rush through meals without giving them much thought.

Take a moment today to appreciate where your food came from, the people involved in growing, producing, transporting, and preparing it, and the nourishment it provides your body.

Practising gratitude around food can help encourage mindful eating, reduce stress, and create a more positive relationship with eating.

Whether you’re sharing a meal with family, friends, or enjoying a quiet moment alone, take a pause, slow down, and appreciate every bite.

💬 If you’d like support with your nutrition, healthy habits, or creating a more balanced approach to eating, feel free to PM me.💚☘️
