Warning! Graphic content!

But, you could have a quick look anyway for educational purposes πŸ€“ Before you scroll down, you may want to finish reading this post. What is it about? It's about wearing your nails for too long. Among the pictures you will find 7-8 and even 12 week old nails. I'm not bragging saying "look how well my nails last!" Quite the opposite, I want to warn you that wearing the nails for too long can be pretty dangerous. Some of the proof is in the pictures, but not everything, because I thought it's scary enough already πŸ˜…
Feel free to share this post and give it a ❀️

First of all how often should nails be refilled? Gel polish manicure, IF APPLIED WITHOUT GAPS AT THE CUTICLES and if done with MINI OVERLAY - 3 weeks. After 3 weeks some minor cracking and lifting may occur.

Acrylic/gel nails: 4 weeks max! In rare cases if nails grow slowly 5 weeks, but even that is pushing it.
By the way, on average nails grow at a speed of 1mm per week.

What happens after 4 weeks? What changes? Any artificial product is applied according to particular rules. If you look at your nails (acrylic, gel or gel polish), the product is thinner at the cuticle area, at the sides and at the tip. The middle of the nail is thicker. It's called stress zone. It's needed for protection of the nail from breaking. After 4 weeks the stress zone moves by 4mm towards the edge of your nail bed, shifting the weight and creating imbalance of the structure. After 5-6 weeks that weight increases even more and any slight pressure onto the free edge creates a lot of pressure onto the stress zone (which is not protected anymore), causing it to crack or break.

So what can happen if nails are worn for longer than 4 weeks? In the beginning you might not notice any of these, but your luck may eventually run out πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

1. Cracks in the nails. If not very deep, easy to fix, but can be annoying. If deep cracks occur, they can be pretty painful and sometimes cause bleeding. Any wound on your hands and nails is a potential gate to infection. Cracks may lead to really bad breaks (like in one of the pictures) in the middle of the nail bed.

2. Lifting. Can be harmless, but there are dangers here too. Every time artificial product lifts from your nail plate it lifts a few layers of your nail too, which leads to thinning of the nail.
Lifted product can create a perfect pocket for bacterial (usually pseudomona, also called "greenie") and fungal infections. Bacterial infections are easier treated than fungal, but either of them will mean no getting your nails done for a while until they've been treated and healed, if you don't want to spread the infection to other nails.

3. Onycholysis (nail plate separation from nail bed). There can be lots of causes of onycholysis, but one of the most common causes is trauma due to the nails being too long. Onycholysis itself is not dangerous. But it can trap moisture and bacteria in it, and if your immune system is weakened, infection can settle in.

4. Lastly, they just don't look good anymore with big gaps and changing shape (missing corners, etc).

Anyway, I'm not here to tell you what to do and what not to do (despite the cover photo of this post πŸ˜„), my job is to give you information to think about. It's your choice whether you want to take a risk or not πŸ˜‰
