Cosmetic dentistry looks nothing like it did 30 years ago. So when Dr. Ahmad Al-Hassiny asked what has actually changed, the interesting part was how often the answer came back to the fundamentals.

Gardee trained under Christian Coachman, has practised through the entire move to digital, and is a past president of the Digital Dentistry Society UK.

Had some questions from the last post - what is copy/paste dentistry? Well, this is where we design a natural facially guided smile design that is unique for our patient. We then approve this in the form of a smile test drive and further customise if needed at this stage. Once it’s approved we then want to deliver EXACTLY what we decided on and promised the patient. The ability to copy the design and paste it EXACTLY in the manufacturing process (whether milled or 3d printed) is what copy paste dentistry is. To copy the design and paste it without any changes. More often than not this is with monolithic restorations (restorations that are straight out of the machine and then stained/glazed). When you cutback and layer the technician will always have a chance to change the approved project as human error is possible. It is less possible for error with digital copy/paste. As well the ability to use infinite algorithms of natural scans of teeth makes it easier to replicate nature perfectly. And it’s not a one size fits all scenario -some patients want ultra natural, some want Hollywood - that’s the patients choice. In today’s day and age we know nature knows best. But the ability to be flexible and take into account our patients wishes where possible is what true artistry is all about as beauty for sure ultimately lies in the eye of the beholder.
