Lovely article. This is what I’ve been busy working on 💖

"Becoming a social enterprise was a natural choice because it perfectly aligns with my core values of community and making people feel seen. After working in the hair industry for numerous years, I observed a significant gap in inclusive and community-focused resources, training, and opportunities for black and mixed-race individuals."

In our latest case study, Ivy MacNeil founder of Hair Dreams CIC describes why she decided to set up a social enterprise and how support from Just Enterprise and Firstport helped get her started. Read her story here > https://www.firstport.org.uk/case-studies/just-enterprise-hair-dreams-cic/

Amazing🙏🏽💖

“I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer on 5 September 2022. I found the lump in my left breast in July that year. I waited a few weeks before going to my GP – I guess I was hoping it would disappear by itself.

“When I lost my hair, my diagnosis hit my children. My son looked at me like I was an alien, and my daughter cried and said I didn't look like mummy anymore. I wasn't going to let this affect my children, so I tried to make light of the situation and kept wearing the kids’ dressing up wigs around the house.

“On a dreary October morning, I set off on the school run wearing the kids’ Poppy Troll wig. The children and parents loved it. I got compliments, laughs, and more importantly, it started a conversation.

“Every morning if I was fit enough to take the kids to school, I would wear a wacky wig. Not only that but I would get people to donate money for me to make a fool of myself.

“It was a great distraction for me. It helped me drag myself out of bed on days I wanted to hide away from the world, it got people talking, got them checking their own b***s and it started to raise money for the charity.

“We need better treatments for this disease. Treatments that don't make you nauseous, constipated, lose your hair, lose your breasts, or make you too ill to play with your children. It was at this time, just before my mastectomy, that I decided to organise a ‘Wig Walk’.

“Again, it gave me something to focus on during my mastectomy recovery and radiotherapy.

“I am now slowly getting my fitness back and looking towards the next fundraising event.

“My top tip for a fundraising event would be to let people know how the money will be spent and to raise money for something that is close to your heart.” - Angela
