Managing Back Pain: The Role of Massage & Exercise
Back pain is one of the most common physical complaints, often caused by poor posture, muscle tension, inactivity, stress, or overuse. While rest may help short term, long-term relief usually comes from the right combination of movement and recovery strategies.
Why Massage Helps
Massage therapy can:
Reduce muscle tension and stiffness
Improve blood circulation
Decrease stress and muscle guarding
Improve mobility and flexibility
Support recovery after training or long workdays
Targeted soft tissue work around the lower back, glutes, hips, and thoracic spine can help reduce compensations that contribute to ongoing pain.
Why Exercise Matters
Exercise is essential for building resilience and preventing recurring pain. The right program can:
Strengthen core and spinal support muscles
Improve posture and movement mechanics
Increase flexibility and mobility
Reduce fear of movement and stiffness
Improve overall function and confidence
Effective exercises often include:
βοΈ Core stability work
βοΈ Hip mobility drills
βοΈ Glute strengthening
βοΈ Walking and low-impact cardio
βοΈ Controlled spinal mobility exercises
The Best Results Come From Combining Both
Massage can help relieve symptoms and improve movement quality, while exercise addresses the underlying weakness, stiffness, and movement dysfunction contributing to the problem.
Think of it this way:
Massage helps you move better
Exercise helps you stay better
Key Reminder
Not all back pain is the same. Persistent pain, numbness, weakness, or symptoms radiating down the leg should be properly assessed by a qualified healthcare professional.
Recovery is rarely about complete rest β itβs about smart movement, consistency, and gradual progression.

Fantastic day today. Welcoming London marathon runner .pickering.54 for a recovery session. Di followed a plan to prepare for the marathon and really enjoyed the training, feeling incredibly strong for the marathon. Unfortunately a slight knee issue scuppered the plans. But Di had a cracking run and loved it in London. Well done Di and thanks for putting your faith in the USRP Method.ππππ
