What if the road itself could warn you about ice?

In the 1980s, we explored a new idea for cat’s eyes: road markers that would change colour as temperatures dropped, giving drivers a visible warning of freezing conditions.

The idea was there. The technology wasn’t, at least not yet.

At the time, it couldn’t meet the durability and weather-resistance standards needed for life on the road.

Another idea waiting for its time.

Congratulations to all the graduates who exhibited at New Designers this year! 👏

As the exhibition comes to an end, the big question is: what comes next?

We asked four of our designers to share their advice for emerging designers taking their first steps into the industry.

From putting yourself out there and staying curious, to building connections and finding your own path, here are a few things they’ve learnt along the way.

Congratulations again to everyone who exhibited. We can’t wait to see where your ideas take you next.

Some ideas arrive before their time.

Years ago, we designed a kitchen bin that automatically prepared the next liner as you removed the full one, removing a small but universal frustration.

The catch?

The idea relied on collaboration between bin manufacturers and bin bag manufacturers. The ecosystem simply wasn’t ready.

Sometimes great ideas need more than ingenuity. They need the right conditions to thrive.
