This weekend, at my daughter’s birthday party, I looked around the room and felt overwhelmed with gratitude.
The room was filled with children laughing, playing, growing… and among them were two babies whose births I had the honour of supporting as their doula.
There is something incredibly special about witnessing a baby’s very first breath, their first cry, their first minute of life. To then see those same babies months later, thriving, smiling, surrounded by love, feels like a gift beyond words.
As doulas, we often enter families’ lives during such a sacred and vulnerable chapter. We hold space, offer support, and then quietly step back as life unfolds. Seeing these little ones again reminded me that birth is not just a moment—it is the beginning of a story.
Watching my daughter celebrate another year around the sun, surrounded by children I have known since before they were born, filled my heart in a way I can’t quite describe.
A room full of children is a room full of possibility, joy, and hope. And knowing that I was present for some of their very first moments on Earth is something I will never take for granted.
My heart is so full. ❤️✨

✨ “A few people spoke to me at the end about your talk and what they learned from it, especially the granny midwives.” ✨
Receiving feedback like this means more than I can put into words.
When I created my presentation, “The Gentrification of Home Birth,” my goal wasn’t simply to talk about birth. It was to bring forward the stories that are too often left out of the conversation—the history of traditional midwives, Black birth workers, community knowledge, and the ways birth has changed over generations.
To hear that people left having learned something new, and that the stories of the granny midwives resonated with them, reminds me why this work matters.
Birth is not a medical event. It is history, culture, community, and legacy.
Thank you to everyone who attended, listened, reflected, and engaged with the conversation. The discussions that happen after the presentation are often just as important as the presentation itself.
And perhaps the most beautiful part? This conference took place on my daughter’s birthday—the little girl who inspired me to become a doula in the first place. 💛
The work continues.
If you’re looking for birth education, advocacy, or doula support, my books are open for consultations and full support packages.

This week I’ll be speaking at the Home Birth Benefits Everyone conference, and writing my presentation reminded me why I do this work.
The words flowed easily because home birth, birth equity, and supporting families are subjects I am deeply passionate about. The challenging part? Putting together the PowerPoint! Thankfully, Amanda from The OBC came to the rescue and helped me bring everything together. I’m incredibly grateful for her support.
What feels especially meaningful is that the conference takes place on my daughter’s birthday. She is the reason I became a doula in the first place. My journey into birth work started with her, and now I have the privilege of supporting other families through one of the most transformative experiences of their lives.
Sometimes life aligns in beautiful ways, and this feels like one of those moments.
If you’re expecting a baby and looking for personalised support, I am currently accepting new clients for birth consultations and full doula support packages.

Did you know the word doula comes from the Greek word meaning “woman who serves”?
Today, doulas are so much more than that — we are nurturers, advocates, calm voices, snack providers 😅, and support systems during one of the biggest journeys of your life.
At Wellness With Jael, I offer compassionate, culturally aware support for pregnancy, birth & postpartum — especially for Black women and plus-size birthing individuals who deserve to feel heard, respected, and safe every step of the way. 🤎
Whether you want emotional support, evidence-based information, birth advocacy, or simply someone in your corner saying “you’ve got this” — I’m here for you.
✨ You were never meant to do this alone.

Today, one of my little Capoeira students gave me this drawing.
She’s only 5 years old, and I’ve had the honour of teaching her for the past two years.
What touched me most wasn’t just the picture itself, but what it represents. In her eyes, Capoeira is not just movements, kicks, music, or games. It’s people. It’s connection. It’s community. It’s love.
Teaching Capoeira to children is so much more than work for me.
It’s planting seeds.
Seeds of confidence, discipline, culture, expression, respect, courage, and belonging.
Every roda, every song, every little hand holding another during class becomes part of something bigger. These children are not just learning Capoeira — they are learning how to move through life with rhythm, resilience, and joy.
Sometimes we don’t realise the impact we have until a child hands us a simple drawing that says everything words cannot.
My heart is full today. ❤️

People often see children singing and clapping and think it’s “just play” 🌱
But rhythm is brain work.
When children sing and clap in time, they are building:
✨ language skills
✨ memory
✨ coordination
✨ confidence
✨ emotional regulation
✨ focus and listening
✨ community and connection
Capoeira is so powerful for little ones because it teaches all of this through joy, movement, music, and culture ❤️🪘
Watching Selah learn rhythm through capoeira reminds me that children are designed to learn with their whole bodies — not just sitting still.
If you’d love your child to experience movement, music, culture, confidence, and community, I’ll soon be running children’s capoeira classes at the Unity Centre 👣✨

Birth stories carry wisdom.
So do birth desires.
I’ve been reflecting deeply on the ways women are supported — or unsupported — during pregnancy, birth and postpartum.
So I want to ask you:
🤎 If you have given birth before, what did you feel was missing?
🤎 What kind of care, support or presence would have changed your experience?
🤎 And if you plan to give birth one day, what do you desire for yourself?
More softness?
More information?
More advocacy?
More community?
More cultural understanding?
More autonomy?
More postpartum care?
I truly believe women hold the answers to what birth support should look like.

Home birth didn’t suddenly become empowering.
It became acceptable when it was rebranded.
Because long before the candles, pools, and curated spaces —
Black granny midwives were delivering babies, holding communities, and passing down generations of knowledge.
They were skilled.
They were trusted.
They were essential.
Then came regulation.
In 1921, the Sheppard-Towner Act began shifting birth into medical control in the U.S., and over time, traditional midwives — especially Black granny midwives — were pushed out, discredited, and erased.
Not because they were unsafe.
But because birth was being taken out of community hands.
And now?
Home birth is back.
But it’s not equally accessible.
Not equally supported.
And not equally safe for everyone.
So we have to ask harder questions.
I’ll be speaking on “The Gentrification of Home Birth” at
Home Birth Benefits Everyone in Luton on 06.06.2026.
