I wasn’t going to address this, but after receiving a comment saying that I am “disgusting” for targeting disabled people and that I should provide treatments for free, I think it’s worth explaining why Watt Wellness for Women offers the discounts that we do.

First and foremost, disabled people are not being “targeted”.

I made a conscious decision when I opened my business that I wanted treatments to be more accessible to people who can often benefit enormously from relaxation, therapeutic touch and simply having some time dedicated to themselves — but who may have less disposable income or face additional financial pressures.

That’s why I offer 50% off treatments to disabled clients, people living with chronic pain, unpaid carers, kinship carers and retired ladies.

For perspective, my discounted clients can currently receive a 60-minute treatment for £22.50.

Comparable one-hour massage treatments locally and elsewhere in Fife are commonly around £38–£55+.

I also offer my two-hour Full Works treatment for just £32.50 to those in my 50% group.

But unfortunately, I cannot provide these services for free.

Before I personally earn a penny, the business has bills to pay.

My rent alone is £525 every month.

On top of that there are staff wages, insurance, electricity and other utilities, booking/payment fees, laundry, heating, oils, creams and consumables, cleaning products, stock, equipment, training and the countless other costs involved in running a properly insured treatment business.

And a £22.50 one-hour appointment doesn’t only involve one hour of my time. There is preparing the room beforehand, consultation, the treatment itself, cleaning and changing everything afterwards, washing towels and maintaining the equipment and premises.

I don’t receive funding to subsidise these appointments. The discount comes directly from my business.

Could I charge the same as many other therapists? Absolutely.

Instead, I choose to keep a significant part of my pricing as low as I reasonably can because accessibility has been part of what Watt Wellness stands for from the beginning.

I would genuinely love to live in a world where I could provide every treatment completely free to anyone who needed one. But I also have to keep the doors open, pay my staff fairly and make sure Watt Wellness is still here next month, next year and hopefully for many years to come.

Offering someone a 50% discount isn’t exploiting their disability.

It’s my small business choosing to give up part of its normal income to make something a little more accessible.

And I will never apologise for that. 💜
