What would you do if you turned up to work… and your employer said:

Most people would be shocked.

But for many small business owners, that’s exactly what it feels like when a client cancels at the last minute or simply doesn’t turn up.

Over the past month, cancelled appointments have cost my business £1,550.

And if I’m completely honest…

A lot of that is my own doing.

For a long time, I’ve trusted people and often booked appointments without taking a deposit. I wanted to make booking as easy as possible because I genuinely believed people would honour their appointments.

The truth is, most of my clients absolutely do ❤️.

But I’ve realised that trust alone isn’t enough to protect a small business.

Every appointment in my diary is time I’ve reserved specifically for one person. More often than not, I’ve turned someone else away to keep that slot available. When it’s cancelled at the last minute, it’s usually impossible to fill.

As a small business owner, I don’t receive sick pay, holiday pay or a guaranteed monthly salary. My income depends entirely on the appointments in my diary.

That’s why, from now on, all appointments will require a booking deposit.

Not because I expect the worst from people.

Not because I want to make booking more difficult.

But because deposits aren’t a penalty.

They’re protection.

They protect the time I’ve reserved, the business I’ve worked so hard to build, and the livelihood that supports my family.

Life happens, and I completely understand that genuine emergencies arise. I’ll always do my best to be fair and understanding wherever I can.

But I also have to protect my business.

To every client who turns up, gives plenty of notice if plans change, and respects my time as much as I respect yours…
