There has been a lot of discussion recently about TPO in the nail industry, so I wanted to share some information with my clients.

TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide) is a chemical used in some gel nail products as a photoinitiator, helping the product cure under a UV/LED lamp. Due to updated regulations and safety concerns, products containing TPO are being restricted or banned in certain markets.

What does this mean for nail salons? It means that professional nail technicians need to ensure the products they use comply with the latest regulations and continue to prioritize client safety. Many brands are reformulating their products to remove TPO while maintaining the same high-quality performance.

Hot weather can affect acrylic nails in a few ways:

* Lifting and loosening: Excessive heat can cause natural nails to expand slightly and increase sweating around the nail bed. This may weaken the bond between the acrylic and natural nail, leading to lifting at the edges.
* Softening of products: While properly cured acrylics are quite durable, prolonged exposure to high temperatures (such as hot tubs, saunas, or leaving hands in very hot water) can make them more susceptible to damage.
* Increased risk of breakage: If acrylics begin to lift due to heat and moisture, they can catch on objects more easily and crack or break.
* Discoloration: Strong sunlight and UV exposure can sometimes cause clear or light-colored acrylics to yellow over time.

To protect acrylic nails during hot weather:

* Apply cuticle oil regularly to keep nails flexible and hydrated.
* Wear gloves when doing activities involving prolonged water exposure.
* Avoid excessive heat sources such as saunas and very hot baths when possible.
* Use sunscreen on your hands to help prevent UV-related discoloration.
*Higher temperatures can cause acrylic products to set and harden more quickly during application

If you notice lifting, it’s best to have the nails professionally repaired rather than trying to glue them back down yourself, as trapped moisture can increase the risk of infection.
