Huge congratulations to FIR by Matt Sampson — named Best Restaurant in Wales at the British Restaurant Awards 2026, despite only opening its doors in June.

Tucked away in Hay-on-Wye, FIR is beautifully intimate: just five tables and a chef-led dining experience centred around world-class ingredients, technique and extraordinary attention to detail.

At just 25, Chef Matt Sampson has already made quite a mark. Following the success of FIR at The Vine Tree in Llangattock — which earned a place in the Michelin Guide only months after opening — FIR now brings a 14-course evening tasting menu to Hay-on-Wye.

And we’re incredibly proud that Goodwash is part of the experience.

For 8 years, our Welsh purpose led business has kept going—through Brexit, Covid, the cost-of-living crisis and increasing pressures that continue to make the future challenging for independent businesses.

Along the way, we have upskilled our team, created meaningful employment paid the Real Living Wage, and supported more than 60 communities and charities across the UK.

We believe in working with good people to do good things. One of those good people this year was Rosie O’Donnell, who supported us in designing our Pride Cymru charity candle—helping to raise essential funds for the charity and its work.
