✨ Gua Sha… a little ritual with a lot of intention

Gua sha is so much more than a beauty trend. For me, it’s about slowing down, releasing facial tension and turning skincare into a little moment of self-care. 🤍

I use gua sha in many of my facials, but it’s also a lovely technique to bring into your routine at home.

A few tips to get the most from it:

✨ Prep - Always start with clean skin and plenty of slip. A facial oil or serum helps the stone glide rather than pull at the skin. I love TEMPLESPA It’s All Good for this.

✨ Angle - Aim for around a 10–15° angle, rather than holding the stone upright.

✨ Go gently - More pressure doesn’t mean better results. Facial gua sha should feel soothing, not painful.

✨ Think outward, not just upward - Use slow, intentional strokes, generally working from the centre of the face outwards. Around the neck and lymphatic areas, technique and direction matter too.

✨ Keep it clean - Wash your tool after use with mild soap and warm water and allow it to dry.

Regular gua sha can help with puffiness and fluid movement, while the massage itself can feel wonderful for tension around the jaw, brow and face. And perhaps my favourite benefit? It makes you stop for a few minutes and actually connect with your body rather than rushing through another routine.

🌿 A little reset…

And off they go… two nights at Cub camp. 🏕️💚

Backpacks almost as big as they are, far too much stuff, and two very excited boys ready for an adventure.

I’ll miss them (probably more than they’ll miss me 😂), but I also love that they get to have these experiences, making memories, building confidence and discovering that they can do hard things without us right beside them.

And while they adventure, I’m taking it as a little reminder for me too.

Sometimes rest isn’t something we have to earn.
Sometimes a pause doesn’t need to be productive.
Sometimes looking after everyone else can wait for a moment while we check in with ourselves.

So for the next couple of days, I’m giving myself permission to slow down a little. To reset. To do a few things that fill my cup and perhaps do absolutely nothing at all for a while…. maybe 🤣🤣

Because taking care of ourselves doesn’t take anything away from the people we love.

It helps us come back to them with a little more of ourselves to give. 💙💙

☀️ Some days just feel heavy.

I don’t want to complain. There’s so much exciting stuff happening and so much to look forward to.

But equally, I want to be real and honest.

Do you ever have those days when your anxiety is just a little louder? When doing the things you know will help somehow feels harder?

Or maybe you’re just f***ing tired.

The thing I’m reminding myself at the moment is this:

Feeling better shouldn’t become another thing you have to accomplish.

The last week or so, I’ve been trusting that one tiny step in the right direction is enough.

💧 Filling my water bottle in the morning.
🛁 Having a hot bath.
🏡 Clearing one little space at a time in the massive pre-moving-house clear out.
🏋️ One gym session… which somehow turned into more…

And guess what?

I’m slowly starting to feel a little better.

Not because I’ve fixed everything. Not because I suddenly have all the answers. Just because those tiny things are starting to add up.

You can have a hard day and still take one small step forward.

You can rest.
You can go gently.
You can let uncomfortable feelings be there without needing to figure them all out.

And if all you can manage today is doing the best you can with what you have?

That counts. 🤍

Sometimes one small step really is enough.

I have a few appointments available, so drop me a message to book your table for one 🤍

So what actually happens during a deep tissue massage?

If releasing toxins trapped between muscle fibre is a very simplified explanation what is actually going on and why does a really good massage make you feel so different afterwards?

When we work into muscle and soft tissue, we’re applying mechanical pressure and movement to the tissues…. Still quite simple but that can actually influence several things at once:

✨ Circulation - massage can influence local blood flow and circulation. Locally increasing blood flow to the area can support muscle repair.

✨ Fluid movement - pressure and movement through the tissues can influence the movement of fluid within them.

✨ Muscle tension - working with tense muscles can help them feel softer, more relaxed and less restricted.

✨ Pain perception - massage can influence how the nervous system processes and perceives discomfort.

✨ The nervous system - slow, sustained touch can encourage the body towards a more relaxed state.

So when we traditionally say that massage “breaks down tight muscles” or “releases what is trapped within them,” we’re trying to describe a genuine change that the client can feel.

It’s just not quite as literal as:

“I’ve squeezed the toxins out of your muscles.” 😂

The sensation is real. The physiology is just more complicated.

We’re not replacing your body’s natural detoxification systems. We’re supporting them and working with the body to encourage movement, relaxation and normal physiological processes.

Massage releases toxins… does it?

I recently came across a quote from an osteopath:

“Massage does not release toxins. A good rub down is not going to do the job your liver and kidneys are doing round the clock.”

And actually… (despite the slightly derogatory tone) the osteopath is not entirely wrong. 👀

As massage therapists, many of us are taught to describe deep tissue massage in terms of breaking down tight muscle fibres and releasing toxins or metabolic waste products that have become trapped within the tissues.

It’s an explanation I use myself but on a scientific level it is an oversimplification of a much more complicated physiological process.

Because your liver and kidneys absolutely are doing the job of processing and eliminating metabolic waste. Massage isn’t taking over that job, and we’re certainly not squeezing toxins out of your muscles like toothpaste! 😂

But… that doesn’t mean that “a good rub down” is doing nothing.

Far from it, a professional massage can support all of these processes that are occurring naturally within the body and more…

When we apply pressure and movement to muscles and soft tissues, we’re creating mechanical stimulation that can influence circulation, fluid movement, muscle tension release, pain perception and the nervous system.

And that lovely feeling of being looser, warmer, lighter or more relaxed afterwards?

That’s real.

The advice to drink water post treatment to flush toxins, lactic acid or metabolic waste released - that’s still good advice, even if the process going on underneath is a little more complex than simply flushing something that shouldn’t be there.

I know I’ve been teasing that something new is coming to Calm & Glow… and it absolutely still is. 🌿✨

I’ve been working on several new projects that I’d hoped to launch this month, but right now I need to listen to my body and slow down so that I can properly show up again.

With an impending house move, a surprise engagement, two beautiful 8-year-olds who need their mum, and a few other big changes that I’ll hopefully be able to share with you soon… life is pretty full!

So I’ve made the difficult decision to put those new launches on hold until the New Year.

Thank you so much for bearing with me, and for the ongoing support you give my little business. I’m genuinely so excited about this next chapter and everything I have planned so please stick with me. ❤️

I talk a lot about creating healthy habits and taking care of ourselves, but sometimes another healthy habit isn’t what we need.

Sometimes it’s recognising that we’re carrying too much… and choosing to put something down.

So this is me practising what I preach. Slowing down, making space for what matters right now, and trusting that the rest can wait.

Something beautiful is still on its way. It might just take a little longer. 🌿✨
