🔬 Actinic Keratosis (AK) Treatment Guidelines in the UK 🔬

Let's talk about the best ways to handle Actinic Keratosis (AK), sun-induced skin spots. Here are some key points to remember for AK treatment based on UK guidelines:

🌼 Consult a Dermatology trained medical professional: If you suspect you have AK, it's essential to consult a dermatologist. They're the pros who can accurately diagnose your condition and recommend the most suitable treatment plan.

☀️ Prevention is Key: Protect your skin from the sun's harmful UV rays. Wear wide-brimmed hats, use sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and seek shade during peak sun hours.

🩺 Medical Evaluation: A dermatologist will determine the severity of your AK and recommend treatment options based on your unique skin condition.

💊 Topical Treatments: For mild cases, topical treatments like creams or gels containing ingredients such as 5-fluorouracil or imiquimod might be prescribed. These help remove the damaged skin cells.

🪒 Cryotherapy: Your dermatologist might advise the use of cryotherapy, where the AK is frozen off using liquid nitrogen. This encourages new, healthier skin growth.

🌬️ Curettage: In this procedure, the dermatology trained medical professional scrapes off the AK after numbing the area. It's often followed by electrodessication to destroy remaining AK cells.

🩹 Photodynamic Therapy (PDT): PDT involves applying a photosensitizing agent to the AK area and then exposing it to a special light. This treatment helps destroy the AK cells.

📅 Follow-Up: After treatment, follow-up appointments are important. Your medical professional will monitor your progress and make sure everything is healing well.

🌞 Lifestyle Changes: Avoid tanning beds and limit sun exposure. Regularly check your skin for any changes or new spots.

📣 Spread the Word: If you've had AK, share your experience with friends and family. Encourage them to take sun protection seriously and undergo regular skin checks.

Remember, early detection and appropriate treatment can prevent AK from progressing to skin cancer. Your skin health matters, so take steps to protect it!

Have you heard of Seborrheic Keratosis (SK)?

It's a common non-cancerous skin growth that can pop up as we age. 🧐

🔍 Signs of SK:
1️⃣ Raised, waxy, or warty-looking growths.
2️⃣ Colors can range from light tan to black.
3️⃣ Often appear on the face, chest, back, or shoulders.
4️⃣ Can vary in size, from tiny to several centimeters.

💡 Treatment Options:
1️⃣ Usually, SK doesn't require treatment unless they're bothersome.
2️⃣ Trained Medical Practitioners may remove them if desired, using methods like cryotherapy, curettage, or laser therapy.
3️⃣ Topical creams or ointments might be suggested for some cases.

Remember, if you're concerned about any skin changes, it's best to book a face to face consultation with a trained medical professional.

‼️ SERVICE UPDATE ‼️

With immediate effect, we will be stopping our National Medical Weight Loss Programme at ElysiPhi.

This is in line with guidance from the Department of Health and Social Care and the recent National Patient Safety Alert dated 19th July 2023.

There is currently a national shortage of all GLP-1 receptor agonists. With normal stock not due to return until mid 2024. It is imperative for remaining stock to be nationally allocated to diabetic patients.

Please, be vigilant. No service should be offering this medication off licence following the NPSA release.

Unfortunately, this lack of legitimate availability will no doubt drive up demand and desperation by some. Leading to online black market advertising and supply of unregulated medication. This is a whole "can of worms" situation and extremely dangerous.

As a clinic, we will continue to support our patients with dietary advice and follow-up, but no new prescriptions will be issued.

What if I told you that there was a treatment that not only gave you dewy, plump, smooth, hydrated skin but also provided your skin with the perfect conditions for it to rebuild itself, from the inside out?

Let me introduce the next generation of skin boosters/bio-remodellers/injectable magic…POLYNUCLEOTIDES

Polynucleotides are a powerful injectable treatment that dramatically improves a whole host of skin concerns:

- laxity
- finelines
- dehydration
- rosacea
- pigmentation
- acne scarring
- under eye hollowness & dark circles

They work by triggering your skin's own repair processes and collagen synthesis.

3 treatments spaced 3-4 weeks apart are advised.

Results are apparent within 3-4 weeks with continued improvements.

Following this, a maintenance treatment every 6 months, with good home care, produces long-lasting benefits.

I'm leaving this here...

You can access the full story via this link:

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/us-news/hiv-infection-linked-100-vampire-30411377

Yes, this is reported in New Mexico, but just consider how many spa/salons across the UK are offering Vampire Facials/Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and other injectable procedures?

The risk of Blood Borne Virus transmission is real. Any clinic offering this service should have robust clinical procedures for Infection Prevention Control, including a needlestick injury protocol.

For healthcare professionals, these actions should be second nature.

In order to deliver PRP services, as discussed in the article, ElysiPhi had to register with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The procedure involves a medical assessment, phlebotomy (withdrawing blood, a skill in itself), handling and preparing the sample, and injecting/needling the PRP.

If you are searching for any injectable service, ensure your practitioner can verify how they meet regulation standards.

There is currently a national critical shortage of Utrogestan.

Utrogestan is a micronised progesterone commonly used as part of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) to protect the uterine lining when women are taking estrogen based medications.

The primary concern with unopposed estrogen therapy is an increased risk of endometrial hyperplasia (thickening of the lining of the uterus) and endometrial cancer. Estrogen stimulates the growth of the endometrium, and without the balancing effect of progesterone, the endometrium can become overgrown and potentially lead to abnormal cell growth.

Due to the increase in demand for HRT, the manufacturers of Utrogestan, Besins, are struggling to release enough product to market.

This has impacted how women can access their prescriptions. Currently, pharmacists can only supply 2 months' worth of Utrogestan.

But what are the other options for uterine protection?

The British Menopause Society has advised that women switch to a combination patch or pill, alternatively a hormonal uterine coil (Mirena IUS).

Why are we discussing this here?

Our Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Marie is specialised in Womens Health and can offer advice and support in the clinic.

his review sums up why, on so many levels.

I play a very minor part in my patients' existence. But watching their confidence grow and supporting them to face their fears is one of my WHY'S.

Another is the incredible team , who have become an extension of my family . I couldn't wish for better colleagues, even if they are civvies 😆

Youthful Eyebrows

Eyebrows play an important role in framing the face and can significantly impact appearance, including the perception of youthfulness.

The shape and lifting of the tail of the eyebrows can have specific effects on the overall facial aesthetics.

This example was of a brow I treated with PDO and mono threads.

She was looking to maintain a youthful flick to her brow to complement her beautiful face.

This treatment is also useful to lift a heavy brow.

Treatment is relatively quick with minimal disomfort.

Recommended to be performed by a trained medical professional from CQC registered service. Available

Frown lines, 11's lines, resting furrows, the "go away" lines, creases, crinkles..whatever you wish you call them, it refers to the annoying lines that appear vertically between the brows.

They usually appear after years of muscle movement, squinting, and sun exposure.

In the clinic, we can wrestle them with a number of different modalities.

Ideally, we need to relax the muscles causing the issue (Corrugators and Procerus muscles).

Sometimes, this isn't enough. Particularly if the lines run deep.
So, you may be recommended MONO threads pictured here. Small hair-like threads are injected superficially into the skin. These thin threads stimulate collagen and elastin, improving the texture and tone of the skin over time.

This is a relatively painless procedure that takes only a few moments .

Mono threads can be used anywhere on the skin.

Ideal for above the eyebrow, upper lip lines, and smile lines.

08/06/2023

The period following treatment can be a nervous one for any aesthetics newbie. Often, patients ask:

Will I still look natural?
Will anyone know?

In reality, following most treatments, you can experience mild inflammation, swelling, and minor discomfort. Unfortunately, sometimes even bruising.

It can take several weeks for treatments to settle, on average 4-6 weeks for treatments like PDO threads, dermal fillers, and skin boosters.

At ElysiPhi, we will ensure you have support after your treatment. Before leaving the clinic, you will have the opportunity to review your results and ask questions. You will be supplied with aftercare information, a review date, and provided with our oncall mobile no. for any urgent enquiries.

Most importantly, please remember 'IT WILL SETTLE' 🙏🏻 ❤️

😉

Here's a sneak peak at our model results from last weeks advanced PDO update training

This lady was concerned with jowling, midface laxity, and heavy brows. These are all normal signs of ageing, and with a small tweak, we can correct them.

Treatment included thread lifting to

Brows (including monos)
Midface
Jawline
Neck

Even post treatment, she has gained an incredible lift, brightening and tightening.

Full results are visible in 6 weeks

Polynucleotides are the latest revolutionary tools in regenerative medicine that work on a cellular level to repair tissue and boost skin quality.

In the form of polymerised polynucleotide-based injectable gels, polynucleotides work by stimulating fibroblasts, which encourages cell turnover, improves elasticity, boosts collagen production and hydrates skin thanks to powerful wound-healing polymers.

Polynucleotides also calm inflammation and rebalance melanocyte activity to create an even and refreshed skin tone.

Ideal for treating:

Fine lines and wrinkles
Acne scarring
Dark under-eye circles (especially for patients not suited to dermal filler in this area)
Hyperpigmentation
Rosacea
Poor tone and texture

They can also rejuvenate the scalp, neck, décolletage, inner arms and thighs, knees, and intimate area.

3 treatments are required spaced 3-4 weeks apart, with visible improvement within 2-3 weeks.

This exciting new treatment is available to book now at ElysiPhi in Long Sutton and Chatteris clinics.

At ElysiPhi, we believe there's no such thing as normal. And the best skin treatment results come from root cause analysis.

In oily skin, excessive sebum production can lead to an unbalanced microbiome, comedomes, inflammation, enlarged pores, and even scarring.

In dry, sensitive skins, sebum deficiency leads to an unbalanced microbiome, impaired skin barrier, high skin sensitivity, dryness, pigmentation, and premature ageing.

Really knowing your skin and how to manage it can save you hundreds of £'s on wasted products that simply do not work. (I bet there are a few in your bathroom cupboard!)

During every consultation at ElysiPhi, patients receive bespoke skin care advice and recommendations for in clinic and at home medical grade skin care.

So many of you ask if there is any treatment to target those tricky mid brow lines, or to give slight more lift to the brow area than other treatments can offer.

We have you considered MONO threads?

Aesthetic mono threads are a type of thread used in non-surgical face lifting and skin rejuvenation treatments here at ElysiPhi. These threads are made of dissolvable materials such as polydioxanone (PDO) or polylactic acid (PLA) and are inserted under the skin using a thin needle. The threads are hair like in appearance and once inserted into the skin, create a support structure, promoting collagen production and gently lifting the skin.

Mono threads are less invasive than PDO Cog threads, rather than lifting tissues they improve the texture and tone of the skin.

Ideal for 11's lines, smokers lines, but can be used anywhere on the skin.

Mono threads work by stimulating the body's natural healing response, which creates collagen and elastin fibers that support the skin. The threads are eventually absorbed by the body, leaving behind the new collagen fibers that help to lift and tighten the skin.

Spotting the Symptoms

Melanoma can develop in areas that have high exposure to the sun, such as legs, back, face, and arms. It can also develop in the areas that have less exposure to the sun, such as fingernail beds, soles of feet, and palms of your hands. The very first symptoms and signs of melanoma cancer can be:

Change in the size and colour of existing moles

The sudden appearance of pigmented and unusual looking patches on different parts of the skin

Melanoma does not always begin as a mole. It can also develop on normal-looking skin. It shows various other symptoms such as:

A dark spot on the skin or emergence of mole - Moles usually appear in childhood or in adolescence, and change in colour and size with age. New moles keep on growing at times with changes in hormones.

The main reason behind the growth of moles is when the skin cells grow in a cluster rather than spreading throughout the skin.

The mole that emerges on the skin starts to grow or to spread to other parts of the body. The common reason for the spreading of a mole is the individual's genetics and exposure to the sun. During this process of spreading, the new mole appears, and the old one gets larger. Gradually, the moles start itching along with providing a painful experience.

Change in the band of colour beneath or around the nail - This can be a sign to determine if the person is affected by melanoma. A light or dark-brown colored band appears vertically on the nail. It gradually expands and covers the whole nail.

A sore which doesn'theal - Usually, when a sore appears, it heals within a few weeks. But if it doesn't, then it can be a symptom of melanoma.

Unusual moles - Moles with irregular shapes and borders, with uneven distribution of colours or with many colours, or growth of new moles which are greater than 6 millimetres are some of the common symptoms of melanoma

Get yours checked in the clinic!

05/05/2023

Melanoma begins in melanocytes – the cells that produce the pigment melanin that colours the skin, hair and eyes. Melanocytes also form moles, where melanoma often, but not always develops.

These cancerous growths develop when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells (most commonly caused by over-exposure to UV radiation) trigger mutations that lead the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumours.

As with all skin cancers, melanoma can often be seen on the skin, making it easier to detect in its early stages. But, if left undetected, melanoma can spread to distant sites or organs.

Once melanoma has spread to other parts of the body it is referred to as ‘metastatic melanoma’ at this stage it becomes very difficult to treat and prognosis is poor, so early detection, diagnosis and treatment is vital.

Melanoma often arises from otherwise normal appearing skin (around 70%) or from within a mole or freckle, which starts to grow larger and change in appearance.

Always check your skin once a month for the early warning signs and if you notice anything new, unusual or changing - seek immediate advice.

At ElysiPhi we offer mole checks, book yours today!

In the field of aesthetics, benign lesion removal refers to the removal of benign growths or lesions on the skin for cosmetic purposes.

These lesions may include skin tags, seborrheic keratoses, milia, warts, and other benign growths that may be unwanted or bothersome from an aesthetic perspective.

It's important to consult with a qualified healthcare provider such as a Specialist Doctor, Specialist Nurse, Dermatologist or Cosmetic Surgeon, to determine the most appropriate method for benign lesion removal in aesthetics, based on the specific characteristics of the lesion and individual patient factors.

Proper evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment planning are essential to achieve optimal aesthetic results and minimise risks and complications.

At ElysiPhi, we provide access to lesion scanning via ScreenCancerUK prior to removal of lesions. We offer electrocautery in the clinic for the removal of benign lesions.

We do not offer mole removal as we believe these should be surgically excised by a dermatologist or Plastic Surgeon, and sent for pathology (testing) to safeguard our patients. In this instance, we can support you with any onward referral to NHS and private dermatology services.

If you have a lesion that is concerning you, do not delay in getting it checked.

On HRT? Protect your uterus!

Women who are on HRT but still have their womb need to take progesterone as part of their treatment.

This is because oestrogen can cause abnormal thickening of the womb lining and even cancer, if taken alone.

Progesterone opposes this action and effectively removes the risk. For this reason, your health professional may advise you to take progesterone.

Currently, due to increased demand and manufacturer/supply issues of oral progesterone (utrogestan), protecting the womb lining gets even more challenging.

I mean, who forgets to take their pills when they should? 🤔

A good alternative to oral progesterone is to have the Intrauterine System (IUS) fitted. This is a small plastic device that is inserted into your uterus, and it stays there for 5 years, releasing a low and steady dose of progestogen straight into your womb where you need it most.

Have you been unable to access services?

We can support you with this in our monthly private Women's Health clinic held at ElysiPhi Long Sutton.

For more information and to discuss if the IUS is right for you, book a consultation today (Link in bio)
