The Importance of Upskilling Security Staff in Life-Threatening Bleeding Management
Security officers are often the first personnel to arrive at an incident involving serious injury, long before ambulance crews or medical teams can access the casualty. In situations involving catastrophic bleeding, the actions taken within the first few minutes can make the difference between life and death. For this reason, it is essential that security staff are trained and regularly refreshed in the management of life-threatening haemorrhage.
One of the most critical skills a security officer can possess is the ability to recognise and control severe bleeding. Uncontrolled haemorrhage can lead to shock, loss of consciousness, and death within minutes. By providing security personnel with practical training in the application of tourniquets, pressure bandages, and casualty management, organisations can significantly improve casualty outcomes while awaiting the arrival of emergency medical services.
Tourniquet Application
Security staff should be trained to identify when a tourniquet is required and how to apply it correctly. Tourniquets are designed to stop catastrophic bleeding from limbs where direct pressure alone is ineffective. Incorrect application can reduce effectiveness and potentially worsen the casualty's condition. Through practical training, officers learn:
How to identify life-threatening arterial bleeding.
When a tourniquet is indicated.
Correct positioning and tightening techniques.
How to monitor the casualty after application.
The importance of recording the time the tourniquet was applied.
How to communicate this information during the medical handover.
Prompt and effective tourniquet use can prevent a casualty from losing a fatal volume of blood before professional medical assistance arrives.
Pressure Bandage Application
Not all severe bleeding requires a tourniquet. Security officers should also be competent in applying direct pressure and pressure bandages to wounds. Proper wound management helps control bleeding, reduces blood loss, and provides protection from contamination.
Training should include:
Scene safety and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Application of direct pressure to wounds.
Correct dressing and bandaging techniques.
Recognition of when bleeding is not controlled and escalation to tourniquet use may be necessary.
Ongoing monitoring of the casualty's condition.
A correctly applied pressure bandage can be highly effective in controlling significant bleeding while maintaining casualty comfort and stability.
Recognition and Management of Shock
Severe blood loss often leads to hypovolaemic shock, a life-threatening condition caused by insufficient circulating blood volume. Security officers should be trained to recognise the early signs and symptoms of shock, including:
Pale, cold, and clammy skin.
Rapid pulse.
Rapid breathing.
Anxiety or confusion.
Dizziness or weakness.
Reduced level of consciousness.
Once bleeding has been controlled, the casualty should be managed appropriately to reduce the effects of shock. Where injuries permit, placing the casualty in the shock position—lying flat with their legs elevated—can help improve blood flow to vital organs. Officers should also provide reassurance, maintain body temperature, and continually monitor the casualty until medical professionals arrive.
Effective Medical Handover
The role of security staff does not end when the ambulance crew arrives. A structured and accurate handover is essential to ensure continuity of care. Security personnel should be able to provide medical teams with critical information, including:
What happened and the mechanism of injury.
The location and severity of wounds.
Interventions performed.
Tourniquet application time.
Changes in the casualty's condition.
Any known medical information provided by the casualty or witnesses.
A clear and concise handover enables medical crews to make rapid clinical decisions and continue treatment without delay.
Benefits to Organisations
Investing in life-threatening bleeding and trauma management training provides numerous benefits, including:
Enhanced public safety.
Increased confidence and competence among security personnel.
Improved emergency response capability.
Reduced risk to life during critical incidents.
Greater resilience during major incidents or terrorist attacks.
Demonstration of a proactive commitment to duty of care and public protection.
Conclusion
Security officers are increasingly expected to respond effectively to medical emergencies as part of their frontline role. Training in tourniquet application, pressure bandage use, shock management, and casualty handover equips them with the skills needed to preserve life during the crucial minutes before emergency medical services arrive. By investing in these essential life-saving skills, organisations strengthen their emergency preparedness and empower their security teams to make a meaningful difference when every second counts.

Current situation: trying to do paperwork while being supervised by the toughest inspection team in the business… 😅🧸
Medic Max, Dr Kong, and the whole Little Responders crew are sitting here judging every form I fill in like it’s a medical emergency 🚑📋
Not one bit of help from them either… just silent pressure and emotional support snacks missing from the table 😂
Think there might be something missing in my life… or maybe I’ve officially become the teddy bear administrator! 🐻
All jokes aside, we’re getting everything ready for the next Little Responders Programme — and this lot are clearly making sure standards stay high! 💛
