Frank🤎~The collies are also working extra hard in this heat. We have to gather the hill either early in the monring or late in the evening when it is cooler for them and the sheep. They are an integral part of the team and we couldn’t do our work without them.

Skylarks- Did you know they are a red list species? We have them in abundance here on our farm. 🐦⬛🫶🏻In the Spring and Summer their diet consists of high protein invertebrates including beetles, caterpillars, spiders, earthworms, and grasshoppers, which make up 100% of the chicks’ diet during their first week. Skylarks like a variety of habitats but tend to live in wide-open spaces like large farms, grassy fields, heaths, and saltmarshes where they can watch for danger. They are ground nesting birds and build their homes directly on the ground in short grass or low crops.
Suckler cows are vital allies for bird conservation in Wales, creating diverse habitats that many bird species rely on for food and shelter. Unlike sheep, which graze short and uniformly, cattle use their tongues to tear up vegetation, leaving behind a “mosaic” landscape of tall tussocks, bare soil, and patchy grass. This structural variety provides crucial nesting cover and foraging ground for threatened ground-nesting birds like the lapwing, curlew, and skylark, while the cows’ manure attracts a rich assortment of dung beetles and insects that feed everything from choughs and swallows to farmland waders. By maintaining these healthy, bug-rich upland pastures through traditional grazing, suckler herds help stem the decline of some of Britain’s most vulnerable bird populations.
Conservation grazing with cattle on hill pastures plays a vital role in maintaining species-rich habitats and preventing ecological decline. Unlike sheep, which graze selectively and bite vegetation close to the ground, cattle use their large tongues to wrap around and pull up forage, creating a varied mosaic of vegetation heights. This structural diversity opens up canopy gaps, allowing delicate wildflower species to establish while preventing dominant, aggressive vegetation like bracken, gorse, and coarse grasses from choking the landscape. Furthermore, the physical impact of cattle—their heavy hoofprints—creates disturbances in the soil that serve as ideal germination sites for seeds and offer shelter for insects, ground-nesting birds, and reptiles. By controlling scrub encroachment and stimulating native plant growth, hill-grazed cattle actively support biodiversity and keep irreplaceable open upland ecosystems alive.
