Oast houses are one of Kent’s most beautiful buildings to live in.
They’re also one of the trickiest to get right.
In this reel series I’m sharing the three things we always consider before redesigning an oast house and in part II we’re looking at how to balance heritage architecture with modern interior design
Designing a period home in Kent? Send me a message — I’d love to hear about your space.
Oast houses are one of Kent’s most distinctive period homes and one of the most rewarding to redesign well.
Those roundels, exposed beams and brick, and that unmistakable conical roof give an oast house real character. But the features that make them so special are exactly what make them tricky to design for modern family life.
In this reel series I’m walking through the three things we always consider before redesigning an oast house.
How to work with the round rather than against it.
And how to honour the original character while creating a home that genuinely works day to day.
This is the kind of contemporary interior design we love at Smartstyle Interiors — transforming family homes across Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, Tonbridge, Crowborough and the wider Kent and East Sussex area, with a confident use of colour and a layout built around real life.
Period property renovation, oast house conversions, country home interiors — if you’re restoring a characterful home and want it to feel both beautiful and liveable, this is what we do.
Watch to the end for the one thing most people overlook.

💚 Saying no to boring bathrooms with a lovely combination of colourful cabinetry, tiles and wallpaper
Green is a great colour choice for bathrooms. As it is strongly associated with nature it evokes feelings of calm and relaxation as well as bringing the energy of growth and renewal in to a room 🌿
It is also a colour that enhances light which is useful in bathrooms as they are often small spaces.
What do you think? Would you choose a green bathroom? 💚

What happens when you stop designing your home for other people?
When a home is only built to impress, it stops feeling like yours. The colours play it safe. It looks lovely in photos but can feel like no one really lives there.
The homes I love most say something about the people in them.
The art you couldn’t leave behind. The colour everyone told you was too much. The reading corner that only makes sense to you.
This isn’t self-indulgent, it’s the whole point.
Your home should hold your story, not someone else’s idea of what makes a good one.
So before you ask whether something impresses, ask whether it feels like you. Because that’s where it all starts.
Save this if you needed the reminder. And when you’re ready for a home that actually feels like yours, the link to book a consultation is in my bio.

Your office is the first thing a potential client notices before you’ve even said a word.
For this executive recruitment team in Tunbridge Wells, the original space was functional but it all felt rather forgettable.
We redesigned it from the ground up introducing jewel tones, a smarter layout, intelligent furniture in two distinct rooms with two completely different moods.
