Toenail reconstruction can be a complete game changer for anyone who has lost a toenail or has a toenail that has become severely damaged following trauma. 👣✨

This client is a runner who had severely bruised and damaged her toenail, eventually resulting in her losing the nail completely. As you can imagine, when you’re active and regularly wearing trainers, having a damaged or missing toenail can be frustrating — both practically and cosmetically.

This is where toenail reconstruction can be an option.

Toenail reconstruction is suitable for a variety of situations, particularly where a toenail has been lost or significantly damaged through trauma, running, sports, footwear pressure or repeated impact. It can also be suitable for clients who simply want to improve the appearance of a damaged or missing toenail.

For reconstruction to be appropriate, the nail and surrounding area need to be assessed first. There should be no active fungal infection, and the nail bed and surrounding skin need to be suitable for treatment. If the area is inflamed, infected, excessively sensitive or there are other underlying concerns, treatment may not be appropriate until the issue has been addressed.

This is why a proper consultation and assessment are so important before reconstruction.

For runners in particular, repeated impact and pressure from footwear can contribute to bruising, trauma and nail loss. If you’ve ever finished a run and noticed your toenail has changed colour, become damaged or started lifting, you’re definitely not alone! 🏃‍♀️

The aim of reconstruction is to create a natural-looking enhancement that blends with the existing nail area and gives the appearance of a complete toenail while the natural nail grows back where possible.

Slide one was taken 12 weeks ago, when my client came to me with a painful build-up of callus on her heel.
