I can’t stop thinking about this research from Liverpool John Moores University.

Researchers followed 957 women at a specialist menopause clinic. Two to six months later, depression and menopause-related distress had fallen by around 46%. Among those who had reported suicidal thoughts, recorded suicidal ideation fell by 92%.

Why has this hit me so hard? Because I know what it feels like to lose yourself during perimenopause.

When it collided with my MS, I barely recognised myself. It wasn’t just hot flushes. My brain, confidence, emotions and sense of who I was all changed.

I wasn’t weak or failing to cope. My hormonal and neurological health were colliding, but nobody was joining the dots.

The study was observational, so it cannot prove HRT alone caused the improvements—and HRT isn’t right for everyone. But hormones must be part of the mental-health conversation.

This isn’t about HRT versus antidepressants. It’s about listening, looking at the whole woman and offering individualised care before she reaches crisis point.

Sometimes joining those dots could help save a life.

I had the honour of being in interviewed by the incredible lauren Chiren Women of a Certain Stage for her podcast please gave a listen! I haven’t always been the woman you see running, coaching and telling other women to invest in themselves.

There was a time when I spent six months virtually bedbound.

I already had Multiple Sclerosis. Then perimenopause arrived — and suddenly it became almost impossible to tell where one ended and the other began.

Fatigue. Brain fog. Pain. Anxiety. Cognitive changes. A body and brain that simply didn’t feel like mine anymore.

For a long time, I thought my MS was getting worse.

It wasn’t the whole story.

And THAT experience changed the direction of my life.

It made me realise just how easily women with existing health conditions can have menopausal symptoms overlooked, misinterpreted or simply added to the list of things they’re expected to cope with.

So I went back to learning.

I trained. I researched. I qualified. And eventually I created Bee’s Menopause Coaching.

Not because menopause became my latest interest.

Because I lived through what happens when you don’t understand what is happening to your own body — and I don’t want other women to feel as lost as I did.

Now, at 56, I’m training for the Great North Run half marathon.

Not because I’ve magically fixed everything.

But because that woman who once couldn’t get out of bed deserves to know just how bloody far she came.

I recently had the privilege of sharing the whole story with Lauren Chiren from Women of a Certain Stage.

Thank you Lauren for giving me the space to talk about the messy bits as well as the transformation.

This isn’t really a story about running.

It’s about what can happen when a woman finally understands what she’s dealing with — and starts rebuilding from there.

Sometimes the woman you become is built from the woman you thought you’d lost. 💜🐝

Let’s talk 🗣️ weight gain in menopause! This was me 6 years ago when I wasn’t aware perimenopause definitely had me in its grips! For years we’ve been told the answer is simple…

“Just eat less. Move more.”

So when that stops working, many women assume they’ve lost their willpower.

But what if it was never about willpower?

During perimenopause and menopause, your body is adapting to major hormonal changes that can affect:

✨ Appetite and cravings
✨ Insulin sensitivity
✨ Muscle mass
✨ Stress hormones like cortisol
✨ Sleep quality
✨ Where your body stores fat

That doesn’t mean weight loss is impossible.

It means the strategy has to evolve.

Instead of eating less…

🐝 Eat enough protein to protect muscle.
🐝 Strength train to increase metabolic health.
🐝 Prioritise sleep like it’s part of your nutrition plan.
🐝 Manage stress before it manages you.
🐝 Stop chasing perfection and start building consistency.

Your body isn’t broken.

It simply needs a different instruction manual.

💬 Which part has become the biggest challenge for you in midlife?

A) Belly fat
😎 Cravings
C) Low energy
D) Motivation
E) Nothing seems to work anymore

Comment below—I’d love to know where you’re finding it hardest, because chances are you’re not the only one.

No one told you !

Nobody prepares you for the grief.

Not just the grief of getting older.

The grief of missing the woman you used to be.

The one who could juggle everything.
The one who had endless energy.
The one who didn’t have to think about sleep, hormones, brain fog, exhaustion or whether she’d have enough left in the tank for tomorrow.

So many women tell me they feel broken.

You’re not broken.

You’re carrying the weight of years of responsibility, stress, caregiving, work, family, expectations… and now your hormones are changing too.

It’s okay to miss the old version of you.

But don’t get so busy looking backwards that you miss who you’re becoming.

Because beneath the exhaustion is still you.

Still wise.
Still capable.
Still worthy.
Still enough.

❤️ If this resonates, tell me:

What is one thing you miss about the old you?

And what is one thing you’re learning to love about the woman you are now?

Menopause isn’t an ending. It’s second puberty — and no one gave us the manual.”
During perimenopause, your brain actually remodels like it did in adolescence. Estrogen receptors in the prefrontal cortex downshift, which is why decision fatigue + rage feel teenage-level. But it also means this is a neurological window for rewiring habits.
