Sometimes a hair appointment becomes so much more than just getting our hair done. It becomes a safe space to talk, to laugh, to cry and to realise we’re not the only ones feeling this way.

I talk a lot in the salon about perimenopause and the challenges so many of my clients are facing—including myself. Hot flushes, anxiety, brain fog, aching joints, interrupted sleep, hair changes… and so often, feeling like we’re somehow “losing ourselves.”

So when I came across the Grandmother Hypothesis, it really resonated with me, and I wanted to share it with you ❤️

Out of thousands of mammal species on Earth, only humans and a handful of whales experience menopause. Scientists believe one explanation is that older females became increasingly valuable to the survival of their families and communities, sharing knowledge, experience and support rather than continuing to have children.

In orca pods, the oldest females lead. They remember where food can be found, guide the younger generations and pass on knowledge that only comes with experience. Their value doesn’t diminish with age—it grows.

Human women have always been much the same.

We are the calm in the chaos, the voice of experience, the ones who have overcome every challenge that’s brought us to this point. Our bodies may be changing, but our strength, wisdom, resilience and capacity to love are deeper than ever.

Menopause isn’t the end of our story.

It’s the start of a new chapter. One where our worth isn’t defined by youth or by what our bodies can do, but by everything we’ve become.

So if today feels hard, be kind to yourself.

You are not “just getting old.”

You are not “falling apart.”

You are changing, growing and stepping into a stage of life that deserves just as much respect, compassion and celebration as every stage before it.
