A colleague Dr (Med) Khadel Mahama randomly called me and said, “I have some medical consumables. I thought you could use them for patients.”
He had pregnancy, malaria, Hepatitis B and syphilis test kits.
At first glance, you may think, “They’re just basic test kits.”
But working in our health system teaches you never to underestimate the basic.
For some patients, these simple tests are not readily accessible. When investigations are delayed because they aren’t covered by NHIS or because patients simply cannot afford them, a “basic” test can become a very big deal.
What touched me most was that we haven’t worked together for years. Yet when he had an opportunity to help, he remembered the work I do and reached out.
This donation has now been distributed to the Emergency and ANC units at Pantang Hospital, where I hope it will help many patients access essential screening for free.
To my colleague Dr (Med) Khadel Mahama, thank you for seeing a need and choosing to fill it.
Kindness doesn’t always have to be grand. Sometimes, it comes in a box of “basic” test kits and makes a world of difference.
To anyone celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or simply looking for a way to give back, you don't need millions to change a life.
Never underestimate the power of meeting a basic need.

We can end cervical cancer in our generation. Let's not waste that chance.
As an Obstetrician & Gynaecologist and Women’s Health Advocate, I believe we must move beyond treating cancer to preventing it, detecting it early, and making care accessible to every woman.
Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending the “Advancing Comprehensive Women’s Cancer Care in Ghana: Prevention, Policy and Sustainable Access” workshop, convened by Africa Health Business in collaboration with MSD Manual Professional, at Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel, Accra.
The moment that stayed with me: Dr. (Med) Selorm Kutsoasi, Programme Manager for Ghana's Expanded Programme on Immunisation, revealed that over 2 million girls aged 9 - 14 have received the free HPV vaccine since its introduction in October 2025 (in less than a year).
That's over two million futures protected from cervical cancer before it can ever take root, but prevention also requires regular screening, early detection, and timely treatment.
Let’s screen regularly.
Early detection saves lives.
Let’s vaccinate.
Let’s prevent what we can.
Before that moment comes, have the conversation.

If you’ve ever cared for a sick relative in an African hospital, what stressed you the most?
We talk about the patient.
We ask, “How is the patient doing?”
We check the medications.
We monitor the vitals.
We worry about whether they will get better.
But sometimes, standing quietly beside that hospital bed is a mother who hasn't slept properly in days.
A daughter who has been running from one hospital department to another.
A son who is trying to find money for treatment while pretending to be strong.
A husband, wife, sibling, or friend who hasn't had time to eat, rest, cry, or even process what is happening.
They are called caregivers.
But who takes care of them?
Sometimes, the person caring for the patient is also hurting.
Sometimes, they are exhausted.
Sometimes, they are scared.
Sometimes, they are silently breaking down while telling everyone else, “I'm fine.”
Healthcare should not only ask, “How is the patient?”
Sometimes, we need to ask:“How are YOU coping?”
Because behind every patient is often another person carrying a heavy burden.
And that person deserves care too.
TOLAC = Trial of Labour After Caesarean is attempting a vaginal birth after a previous C-section.
VBAC = Vaginal Birth After Caesarean is when that attempt successfully ends in a vaginal birth.
Generally, TOLAC may be considered when the previous uterine incision is suitable, there is no current contraindication to vaginal birth, and the hospital has the capacity to perform an emergency C-section if needed.
Factors such as previous vaginal birth/VBAC, the reason for the previous C-section, type of uterine scar, number of previous C-sections, and the current pregnancy all matter.
TOLAC is the attempt. VBAC is the outcome

She Couldn't Breastfeed… But She Is Still an Amazing Mother.
Some mothers cannot breastfeed because of medical conditions, medications, low milk supply, or other circumstances beyond their control.
A well-fed, loved, and thriving baby is the goal. Motherhood is not measured by how a baby is fed, but by the love, care, and sacrifices behind every feed.
Being diagnosed with fibroids doesn't automatically mean you'll need a "big cut." Depending on the size, number, and location of the fibroids, treatment options may include hysteroscopy, keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery, open myomectomy, uterine artery embolization (UAE), or MRI-guided focused ultrasound.
Don't let fear stop you from seeking help, talk to a gynaecologist to find the option that's best for you.
