The Government, through the National Blood Service, is encouraging Ghanaians to support the Service to the Soul Nationwide Blood Drive on Saturday, 8 August 2026, as part of efforts to replenish blood stocks and save lives across the country.

The humanitarian initiative is being held in memory of the eight fallen heroes, whose lives and service to the nation continue to be remembered.

Blood donations can help hospitals respond to critical needs, including supporting mothers during childbirth, accident victims, cancer patients and children with acute infections.

Members of the public who are eligible to donate are encouraged to visit designated Regional Blood Centres and Blood Collection Units across the country. In Greater Accra, donation points include the Greater Accra Regional Blood Centre at Korle Gonno, Conquerors Chapel in Dansoman, Grace Presby Church in Aplaku, Presbyterian Church of Ghana in Apenkwa, and other designated facilities.

The orthopedic surgery block may be complete on board the Africa Mercy, but the healing journey continues.

The hospital is now filled with children in casts, big smiles, new friendships and plenty of play as they recover from surgery and look ahead to brighter futures.

Twenty-two patients benefit from Gh₵2m Complex Device Implant at Cardio Centre, Korle Bu

Mount Camel Foundation in collaboration with the National Cardiothoracic Centre (NCTC), Korle Bu, The Ghana Medical Trust Fund-MahamaCares and Africa World Airlines have successfully completed 22 complex cardiac device procedures for patients facing severe heart rhythm abnormalities.

This joint initiative, estimated to cost the 22 patients GH₵2m, brought together healthcare specialists from the United States of America (USA) and Ghana, combining local expertise with international support to deliver critical care to patients brought in from across the nation.

During a debriefing session at the end of the five-day mission, Director of the NCTC, Dr. Kow Entsua-Mensah noted that the mission demanded seamless multidisciplinary teamwork, assembling cardiac surgeons, cardiologist-electrophysiologists, anesthesiologists, cathlab, operating room, ward and ICU nurses, radiographers, pharmacists, medical laboratory scientists and support staff. Thus, this seamless coordination enabled the medical team to safely navigate technical challenges, with all patients recovering well and ready to be discharged by the final day.

Dr. Entsua-Mensah added that both the US and Ghanaian teams view this success as a foundation for long-term collaboration. By pairing direct patient care with sustainable knowledge transfer and local training, the initiative will continue to build a robust framework for advanced cardiac electrophysiology care in Ghana.

Dr. Entsua-Mensah added that those who could not turn up for the treatment during the week will still be taken care of by the team at the Cardio Centre when they were ready.

Juliet Asabea Awuku who was living with heart failure secondary to peripartum cardiomyopathy, was given a second chance at life following a successful Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) device procedure.

"The immense financial relief of this procedure means everything to us," she shared. "My family and I are profoundly grateful to the dedicated local medical team here in Ghana, as well as the diaspora specialists who traveled to support us. May God richly bless you all for your gift of health and hope."

Dr. Kamel Addo, a Cardiologist-Electrophysiologist and team lead from the Mount Carmel Health System in Columbus, Ohio also remarked that the partnership with the Cardio Centre aided in tackling intricate electrophysiology procedures; specifically Cardiac Resynchronization Therapies (CRTs) Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators and left bundle branch area pacing, focusing on under-resourced patients suffering from severe heart rhythm abnormalities.

He further commended the cohesion of the team at the Cardio Centre, their discipline, skill and professionalism that made sure that this number of cases could be treated seamlessly over the period.

He added that, beyond the clinical expertise, the mission was sponsored by the Mount Carmel Foundation which helped lessen the financial burden of the devices and procedures, ensuring that high-level cardiac care was fully accessible to patients who otherwise could not afford these life-saving interventions.
