Swollen feet and ankles (edema) in (CKD) happen because failing kidneys can't remove extra fluid and salt, causing it to build up in tissues, especially lower limbs due to gravity, often noticed as tight shoes or sock marks. This fluid retention is a key sign, along with protein loss (nephrotic syndrome), leading to swelling around eyes, hands, feet, and legs, and sometimes breathlessness. Managing this involves low-sodium diets, fluid restriction, and treating underlying kidney/heart issues.
How Causes Swelling (Edema)
Fluid & Sodium Imbalance: Damaged kidneys can't effectively filter waste and excess sodium (salt) and water, leading to retention in the body.
Protein Loss ( ): Kidney damage can let albumin (a crucial blood protein) leak into the urine. Low albumin levels in the blood cause fluid to shift from blood vessels into tissues, causing swelling.
Gravity: Fluid tends to pool in the lowest parts of the body, like feet and ankles, making swelling worse there by the end of the day.
Signs & Symptoms
Puffy or swollen feet, ankles, hands, or face.
Skin may be tight, or leave temporary indentations (pitting) when pressed.
Socks might leave marks on the skin.
Feeling of being bloated or distended.
Breathlessness (if fluid builds around the lungs).

(hypertension) damages kidney health by narrowing, weakening, and hardening the kidney's blood vessels, impairing their ability to filter waste and excess fluid, which in turn causes fluid and salt to build up, further raising blood pressure in a dangerous cycle that can lead to kidney failure. Kidneys also regulate blood pressure, so when they're damaged, they struggle to control fluid and hormones, worsening hypertension.

How Harms Kidneys
Damages Blood Vessels: The force of high blood pressure damages the delicate arteries and filtering units (glomeruli) in the kidneys, reducing oxygen and nutrient supply.
Impairs Filtration: Damaged vessels can't filter waste and extra fluid effectively, causing toxins and fluid to build up in the body.
Creates a Vicious Cycle: The retained fluid increases blood volume, which pushes blood pressure even higher, causing more kidney damage and making blood pressure harder to control.
How Kidney Damage Worsens Blood Pressure
: Healthy kidneys release hormones (like aldosterone) that help regulate blood pressure.
Reduced Regulation: Damaged can't properly manage fluid, salt, and these hormones, leading to elevated blood pressure.

Kidney problems, especially Disease (CKD), are common in older cats, with key signs including increased thirst and urination, weight loss, poor appetite, lethargy, vomiting, and bad breath. Causes range from infections and toxins to genetics, and while there's no cure, early diagnosis via blood/urine tests allows for management with special diets, fluids, medications, and hydration to slow progression and improve quality of life, say vets and the PDSA.
Common Symptoms
Behavioral: Hiding, decreased energy, poor coat quality.
Urinary: Drinking much more water, urinating more frequently/in larger amounts.
: Decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, bad breath, mouth ulcers.
Physical: Weight loss, pale gums, dehydration signs (dry gums, poor skin elasticity).
Severe: Blindness, seizures (due to high blood pressure).
Causes
Infections (like pyelonephritis).
Toxins (certain plants, chemicals).
Kidney stones (nephrolithiasis).
Cancer.
Genetic conditions.
Aging.
Diagnosis & Management
Diagnosis: Blood tests (checking creatinine) and urine analysis are key.
Treatment Goals: Slow the disease, manage symptoms.
Management Includes:
Diet: Prescription kidney diets.
Hydration: Encourage water intake (fountains help).
Fluids: Subcutaneous (under the skin) fluids for dehydration.
Medications: For blood pressure, nausea, phosphorus levels.
Vitamins & Supplements.
What You Can Do
Monitor: Watch for the classic signs (thirst/urination changes).
Hydrate: Make water accessible and appealing.
Regular Vet Checks: Especially for older cats, for early detection. For more information call or WhatsApp +233531788504.
