【Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease Is Now in Peak Season - Take Preventive Measures😷📢】

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common disease in children caused by enteroviruses. In Hong Kong, HFMD typically peaks from May to July and again from October to December. According to the surveillance data from the Centre for Health Protection, local HFMD activity has continued to rise recently. The public should stay alert and pay attention to hygiene.

HFMD is mostly transmitted by direct contact with nose and throat discharges. Sick children should stay at home and avoid contact with other children until they have fully recovered. Everyone should stay vigilant and follow these preventive measures:
✅ Wash hands thoroughly before eating, after going to the toilet, and after changing diapers;
✅ Cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing;
✅ Maintain good indoor ventilation; and
✅ Thoroughly clean toys or appliances that are contaminated by nasal or oral secretions.

【Stay vigilant against seasonal influenza🛡】

Hong Kong is currently in the summer influenza season. The latest surveillance data show that local influenza activity remains at a high level. 📈

Vaccination is scientifically proven to be one of the most effective ways to prevent seasonal influenza and its complications. It also helps reduce the risks of influenza-associated hospitalisation and death. 🏥

The 2025/26 Seasonal Influenza Vaccination (SIV) Programmes, encompassing the SIV School Outreach Programme, the Residential Care Home Vaccination Programme, and the Vaccination Subsidy Scheme, commenced on September 25. Eligible high-risk groups can receive a free or subsidised SIV through various vaccination programmes. 💉

Besides getting vaccinated, the public should maintain good personal and environmental hygiene, and follow these measures:
• High-risk individuals should wear surgical masks when going to crowded places😷
• People with respiratory symptoms, even if mild, should wear a surgical mask and seek medical advice promptly. They should refrain from work or attending class at school.

【Maintain strict personal and environmental hygiene amid increasing activity of hand, foot and mouth disease🛡】

The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health reminds the public to maintain strict personal and environmental hygiene as the local activity of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) has recorded a significant increase recently. 📈

HFMD is a common disease in children caused by enteroviruses (EVs) such as Coxsackie virus and EV71. HFMD occurs throughout the year in Hong Kong, with peaks usually occurring from May to July and October to December. HFMD spreads more easily among young children in schools and care institutions where young children have close contact that will cause an increased outbreak risk. With the rise in HFMD activity, parents should closely monitor their young children’s health. ⚠️

To prevent HFMD, the public should follow these preventive measures:
✅ Maintain good air circulation;
✅ Keep hands clean and wash hands properly. Alcohol-based handrub should not substitute hand hygiene with liquid soap and water, as alcohol does not effectively kill some viruses causing HFMD.
✅ Cover the nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing and properly dispose of nasal and oral discharges;
✅ Regularly clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces such as furniture, toys and commonly shared items;
✅ Avoid going to overcrowded places;
✅ Sick children should stay home until their fever and rashes have subsided and all vesicles have dried and crusted; and
✅ Parents should maintain close communication with schools to update them on the latest condition of sick children.
