🎤 How the Irish Oral is Marked – A Quick Guide for Students!
Many students ask how the Scrúdú Cainte is actually marked. Here’s a simple breakdown of the 240 marks available and where they come from 👇
1️⃣ Personal Information – 5 marks
Students introduce themselves:
• Name
• Age
• Date of Birth
• Address
• Exam Number
2️⃣ Poetry / Prose – 35 marks
You may be asked to recite a poem or a prose piece. Marks are awarded for:
• Accuracy
• Rhythm and flow
• Pronunciation
3️⃣ Conversation – 120 marks (THE BIG ONE!)
This is the main part of the exam and includes discussion about topics such as:
• School life
• Hobbies
• Family
• Local area
• Future plans
Examiners assess things like:
✔️ Communication
✔️ Vocabulary range
✔️ Fluency
✔️ Pronunciation
✔️ Ability to expand answers
4️⃣ Picture Sequence – 80 marks
Students describe a sraith pictiúr story. Marks are given for:
• Narration of the story
• Grammar and vocabulary
• Ability to answer follow-up questions
✨ Total: 240 marks
The key thing examiners are looking for is communication. If students keep talking, develop their answers, and show their language skills, they can score very well.
