2016 was the year I completed my AcroYoga teacher training. That is still one of my finest achievements. It was also the year of an awful break up. I initially saw this trend and thought it was a terrible year but then looked at my old photos and realised all the great things that happened. It was the year of inspirational quotes. I'm over that now but some of these quotes are still good. 2016 was definitely a turning point and though it did not feel bright, it was important. It was the year I taught myself to crochet. I was obsessed and though I'm not crocheting much these days, it was such a satisfying hobby. I did a lot of AcroYoga. I'd like a bit more of that now. It was the year I organised my first foreign yoga retreat (to Morocco). In some ways it feels like another lifetime and in other ways it's just like yesterday.

So much of what's important in life requires us to manage stress. The things we want most in life often involve huge amounts of uncertainty and potential disappointment and yet the only alternative is to avoid those things we want. Falling in love, getting that job you want, buying a house etc. These are all the things that require passion and enthusiasm but also some level of acceptance that you might not get what you want. As you prepare for that 2nd round interview or make a bid on that house, you have to really want it while also knowing you might not get it. It's hard! Something I've always loved about ashtanga is that it exposes you to stress and helps cultivate resilience. It's ok to spend the whole class thinking about that one pose that's hard or challenging or makes you a bit anxious. It's an opportunity to observe that and work on it and most of all not shy away from it. Because on the other side of stress is the thing you really want and if you didn't want it, you wouldn't be stressed! So, remember that low levels of stress get things done and propel us forward. Don't be afraid of it. Just learn to manage it.
