According to a review published in the Journal of Environmental Public Health - our modern diet are all contributing to the rising acid loads in our bodies, leading to metabolic acidosis and potentially other serious long-term conditions.⠀
Alcohol, coffee, simple carbs such as sugars and processed grains, meat - all carry “high acid load”. In response to this acid load our body continuously tries to bring itself back into balance (“pH homeostasis”) by releasing calcium phosphates and carbonates. According to the review - the quantity of calcium lost with our urine (thanks to our modern diet) over time could be as high as almost half our skeletal mass! Apart from the bone mineral loss this puts heavy pressure on our kidneys, our important detoxification organs.⠀

For everyone, gluten is not the enemy!!
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and spelled grains. If you have coeliac disease, your body mistakes this protein for a foreign pathogen and attacks the cells of your gut wall via an autoimmune reaction, causing damage to these cells. For these people, gluten-free DOES mean healthier and is essential.

• Doesn’t taste as good

Reasons people may feel better eating gluten-free:
✅they replaced a lot of processed foods with more whole foods, like more fruit + veg, and home-cooked meals.
✅they also adopted other healthy behaviors when they made the decision to go ‘gluten-free’, like drinking more water.
✅they are sensitive to fructans, a FODMAP found in wheat, and reduced their intake of those.
✅they associate feeling not-so-great after certain meals with ‘gluten’ when it was other factors contributing…think: stress, eating too quickly, eating a very large/heavy meal, like a big bowl of pasta carbonara 🤪

If you personally feel better-eating gluten free and enjoy eating this way, as long as you’re still able to meet your nutritional needs.
But don’t fall into the marketing hype of believing you must eat GF to be healthy and developing a bad relationship with food. 🙌🏼💛
