ARE CHEMICAL SUNSCREENS ARE TOXIC?⁣

☀️Truthfully, this is a controversial topic. But long story short, you can't make a blanket statement for all chemical UV filters. ⁣

☀️They are controversial because some of them can lack photostability, and can be hormone disruptors. ⁣

☀️However newer sunscreen formulas are formulated with photostable filters. ⁣

☀️Studies flagging hormonal issues weren't conclusive. Hence FDA hasn't marked them as unsafe. ⁣

☀️So, should you use them? Find the right kind of chemical UV filter.⁣

PHYSICAL SUNSCREENS ARE A BETTER ALTERNATIVE ... or are they? ⁣

☀️With rising concerns about the safety for chemical sunscreens, physical sunscreens have become all the more popular. But physical sunscreens come with their own set of limitations. ⁣

☀️Physical sunscreen filters are also known as inorganic or mineral sunscreen filters.⁣

☀️Currently the FDA has approved only two - Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. ⁣

☀️While the combination of two give reliable, broad spectrum protection, they give a white cast to the skin. This leads to users either avoid using it, or not using enough quantity. (which can lead to lesser UV protection.)⁣

☀️If you choose to use a physical sunscreen, remember to use an even layer and reapply every 2-3 hours.⁣

Did you know the FDA regulates sunscreen as an OTC drug, and not a cosmetic?

☀️Its ability to protect us against UV rays that potentially causes skin diseases and even cancer gives it its status.

☀️Hence, skipping it is not an option and picking the right one even more crucial. However, it doesn’t end there. It must be applied liberally, 15 minutes before sun exposure, every two hours.

☀️Lastly, applying sunscreen doesn’t give one the licence to play around in the sun for long hours. If you can, supplement the sun protection with the right clothing, sunglasses and hats.
