Genetic skin disorders are rare conditions caused by genetic mutations which can be inherited from our parents or are sometimes spontaneous in nature. They affect the core structure, function and appearance of skin. In severe cases they can be life threatening or can cause lifelong disability. Examples include ichthyosis, Epidermolysis Bullosa, Ectodermal dysplasias and many more. With genetic tests now available, it is possible to identify the mutations, confirming diagnosis and guiding management. With research going on in gene therapy, we are hopeful for the future of patients affected by these rare disorders.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is now Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome with emphasis on the multi endocrine and metabolic nature of the condition where ovaries are just one part of the symptom complex. A multidisciplinary approach is needed for such patients with Dermatologists', Endocrinologists and Gynaecologists along with lifestyle modifications with focus on long term mental, metabolic, reproductive and physical health. Please see a certified Dermatologist for stubborn acne, hair thinning, unwanted facial hair, darkening of the neck, multiple skin outgrowths over the flexural areas of the body - as these can be a part of the symptom complex of PMOS.

Lip Pigmentation can result due to various causes, both physiological and pathological. It was an honour for Dr. Saloni Katoch, Consultant Dermatologist, Dr. KN Barua Institute of Dermatological Sciences to deliver a talk on the causes, advances in management and challenges faced in the area of lip pigmentation at the International Pigment Cell Conference and Pigmentarycon 2026 at the India Habitat centre, New Delhi. The talk also included a few rare presentations of cancers on the lip from the North East region due to the cultural habit of chewing areca nut, to***co and betel quid leaves, a potent carcinogen. With many researchers and dermatologists from across the world, the conference offered newer insights in the understanding and management of various Pigmentary disorders of the skin.

Dr. Debastuti Bharali, MD Dermatology (NEIGRIHMS, Shillong) successfully completed a three week observership program in basics of Aesthetic dermatology, Lasers and Procedural dermatology at Dr. KN Barua Institute of Dermatological Sciences, Guwahati, Assam. As doctors passing on knowledge, values and skills is very important especially to the next generation of physicians. We wish her the best for her future endeavours.
