It’s not your shampoo. Recurring dandruff and oiliness rarely have one cause — hard water, product buildup, humidity, scalp microbiome imbalance, hormones, and stress all play a part. Shampoo treats symptoms; scalp care addresses causes. Flakiness or oil, which shows up first for you? Comment below.

Your Shampoo Cleans Hair. What About Your Scalp?
By Professor Eunu Jang
Scalp Physiologist | Korean Scalp Science at MoArae
There is a simple question I ask people when they tell me they have dandruff, an oily scalp, itching or increasing hair fall:
“What are you doing for your scalp—not just your hair?”
Most people don't have a good answer.
And that is the problem.
We have become exceptionally sophisticated about hair care. We buy premium shampoos, imported oils, masks, serums and treatments. We change products when something doesn't work.
But the scalp—the living skin from which every strand grows—often receives very little thought.
Your shampoo is not necessarily the problem.
Shampoo has an important job.
It cleanses the scalp and hair, removing sebum, sweat, environmental particles and product residue. For people with dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, appropriately formulated shampoos can also be an important part of management.
But here is what many people misunderstand:
Clean hair does not automatically mean a healthy scalp.
The scalp is skin.
It has oil glands, sweat glands, hair follicles, blood vessels, nerves, immune activity and its own microbial ecosystem.
It responds to what you put on it.
It responds to how often you cleanse it.
And it can become irritated when you repeatedly expose it to products, chemicals or cleansing practices that it does not tolerate well.
Dermatology references note that excessive or inappropriate washing can disturb the scalp's surface environment, remove too much of its protective oil film and contribute to dryness or irritation.
So the answer is not simply:
“Wash more.”
Nor is it:
“Wash less.”
The better question is:
“What does your scalp actually need?”
---
The oily scalp paradox
One of the most common complaints I hear is:
“My scalp becomes oily within a day, so I wash it aggressively.”
Then the cycle repeats.
Oil returns.
So the person washes again.
Sometimes the answer is simply that the scalp produces more sebum because of individual biology, hormones and other factors.
Sometimes there is also dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis.
And sometimes the scalp is being irritated by the very routine designed to make it feel cleaner.
Dandruff is not simply a hygiene problem. The American Academy of Dermatology specifically notes that dandruff can be associated with oily skin, hair-care habits and several medical conditions.
That distinction matters.
An oily scalp is not necessarily a dirty scalp.
---
And then there is “buildup”
This word is used far too casually in the beauty industry.
Not every flake is buildup.
Not every oily scalp needs a detox.
Not every itchy scalp needs exfoliation.
And not every case of hair shedding originates in the scalp.
A scalp can develop accumulation of sebum, sweat, dead skin cells and product residue. Certain styling products can contribute to residue, and excessive product accumulation can be associated with clogged follicles or scalp irritation.
But the correct response depends on what is actually happening on the scalp.
That is why I believe scalp care should begin with observation—not assumptions.
---
Dandruff is not just “dry scalp”
This is another misconception worth correcting.
Dandruff can involve flaking and itching, but it is not simply a matter of having a dry scalp.
Seborrheic dermatitis, for example, commonly affects oil-rich areas such as the scalp and can cause greasy or dry scaling, itching and inflammation.
And different scalp conditions require different approaches.
Some dandruff shampoos contain ingredients that help reduce scaling. Others target microorganisms associated with seborrheic dermatitis. Some conditions require medical treatment rather than cosmetic care.
This is precisely why I am cautious about the growing trend of treating every scalp problem with another “detox.”
Your scalp is not a surface to be aggressively scrubbed into submission.
It is living tissue.
Treat it accordingly.
---
The luxury mistake
There is an interesting contradiction among affluent consumers.
People will spend ₹5,000, ₹10,000 or more on a bottle of haircare without hesitation.
They will invest in colour protection.
Hair masks.
Serums.
Imported formulations.
Salon treatments.
Yet they may never have their scalp properly examined.
Price does not make a haircare routine intelligent.
Understanding does.
A ₹5,000 shampoo used for the wrong scalp may still be the wrong shampoo.
A beautifully packaged oil does not automatically solve an itchy scalp.
And another hair serum cannot compensate for ignoring persistent scalp inflammation or a condition that actually requires dermatological evaluation.
Luxury, in my view, should mean something different:
Precision.
Knowing what you have.
Knowing what you need.
And not doing more simply because more feels luxurious.
---
Start where the hair begins
The visible strand gets all the attention because it is what we see.
But the biology is underneath.
The hair shaft that you see is largely composed of keratinised cells. The follicle beneath the scalp is living tissue where hair production occurs.
That distinction changes the way we should think about hair care.
Hair is the visible outcome.
The scalp is part of the environment in which it grows.
This does not mean every hair problem can be solved by “fixing the scalp.”
Hair loss has many possible causes—including genetic, hormonal, nutritional, inflammatory and medical factors.
But it does mean we should stop treating the scalp as an afterthought.
---
So, what should you actually do?
Start with something surprisingly simple:
Look at your scalp.
Is it consistently oily?
Is there persistent flaking?
Does it itch?
Does it feel tight or irritated?
Are you repeatedly scratching?
Are you experiencing unusual shedding?
Are you constantly changing products because nothing seems to work?
These observations are more valuable than blindly buying another bottle.
And if symptoms persist, worsen, or are accompanied by significant hair loss, inflammation, pain, sores or other changes, seek assessment from a qualified dermatologist.
Because sometimes the answer isn't another shampoo.
Sometimes the answer is understanding what your scalp is telling you.
---
This is why I believe the future of hair wellness is moving from hair-first to scalp-first.
Not because shampoo is obsolete.
Not because every scalp needs a complicated ritual.
But because personalised care begins with understanding the tissue you are actually trying to care for.
At MoArae, this philosophy is at the centre of our Korean scalp wellness approach.
Observe. Understand. Personalise.
Because exceptional hair care should not begin with a product.
It should begin with the scalp.

Men need haircare, too. 🌱
Most guys wash their hair and stop there — but the scalp is skin, and skin needs care.
At MoArae, we study the scalp first, then treat it: cleansing, calming buildup and sensitivity, and targeted scalp treatments before thinning ever becomes hair loss. Because strong hair starts at the root, not the strand.
