At Ichikawa City Zoo, baby macaque Punch is still on a difficult but hopeful journey - and the viral clips from Feb 19-20 only show part of the story.

Punch, who was rejected by his mother at birth in July 2025, has been slowly learning how to live among other monkeys. Over the past few days, new footage worried many viewers after an adult macaque was seen grabbing and dragging him. But according to the zoo's official update, the moment was likely a protective correction, not a true attack.
Despite the emotional footage, Punch's overall progress is cautiously positive. Staff report he is gradually deepening interactions with the group being groomed, playfully approaching others, and gaining daily social experience.

Observers also noted something very telling: after being dragged, Punch briefly ran to his beloved plush for comfort... but then returned again to try interacting with the troop. That persistence is exactly what keepers hope to see as he learns normal monkey social life.

As of Feb 20, Punch is considered stable and steadily integrating, even though the process looks rough to human eyes. Keepers emphasize that these moments are expected challenges for a young macaque raised without maternal guidance.

He was once completely alone.

Now he's trying - again and again - to find his place.

What actually happened: Punch tried to approach another baby monkey, and the adult - believed to be that infant's mother - intervened to pull him away. The zoo says Punch has experienced similar scoldings before as part of learning troop rules, and importantly, no serious injuries were reported.
