🫁 Intubation — Nursing Quick Notes

Intubation is an emergency and critical-care skill where good preparation and close monitoring are essential. 🩺

✅ Before: Prepare oxygen, suction, bag-valve-mask, ET tube, airway equipment, monitoring and prescribed medications.

✅ During: Assist the intubator, monitor SpO₂, HR and BP, keep suction ready and note the ET tube depth.

✅ After:
• Confirm tracheal placement with continuous waveform ETCO₂
• Check bilateral chest movement and breath sounds
• Secure the ET tube
• Connect to the ventilator
• Monitor vital signs and ventilator parameters
• Continue prescribed sedation, analgesia and oral care

🧠 Remember:
Prepare → Pre-oxygenate → Intubate → Confirm → Secure → Ventilate → Monitor

⚠️ Always follow your local airway/intubation protocol and escalate immediately if tube displacement or deterioration is suspected.

🚨 Ventilator Alarms — Every Nurse Should Know the Basics! 🫁

When a ventilator alarm sounds, look at your patient first — not just the machine.

🔴 High-pressure alarm = BLOCKAGE / RESISTANCE
Common causes:
• Secretions
• Kinked or blocked ET tube
• Coughing or biting the tube
• Bronchospasm
• Reduced lung compliance

🔵 Low-pressure alarm = LEAK / DISCONNECTION
Think about:
• Disconnected circuit
• Loose connection
• ET tube cuff leak
• Circuit leak
• Possible accidental extubation

🟡 Low tidal volume / minute ventilation
Consider an air leak, weak breathing, apnoea or inadequate ventilatory support.

⚠️ Golden nursing rule:
Never simply silence an alarm. Assess the patient first, then check the airway, breathing circuit and ventilator.

🫁 Ventilator Modes — Made Simple for Nursing Students

Ventilator modes can feel confusing at first, but remember one simple question:

👉 Who is doing the breathing — the ventilator, the patient, or both?

🔹 A/C — Ventilator supports every breath
🔹 SIMV — Set mandatory breaths + patient can breathe spontaneously
🔹 PSV — Patient starts the breath; ventilator provides pressure support
🔹 CPAP — Patient breathes spontaneously with continuous positive pressure
🔹 VCV — Volume is set; pressure can vary
🔹 PCV — Pressure is set; tidal volume can vary

💡 Quick memory:
VCV = Volume fixed
PCV = Pressure fixed

Save this for your ICU/critical care revision and share it with a nursing student who may find it useful. 🩺📚

🧬 Types of Antibodies (Immunoglobulins) — Quick Nursing Revision

Our immune system has 5 main types of antibodies, each with a different role:

🔵 IgG → Most abundant in blood, provides long-term immunity & crosses the placenta
🩷 IgA → Found in saliva, tears, mucus & breast milk; protects mucosal surfaces
🟢 IgM → Usually the first antibody produced in a primary immune response
🟡 IgE → Associated with allergic reactions & defence against parasites
🟣 IgD → Found mainly on B cells and helps with B-cell activation

🧠 Easy Memory — GAMED

G → Goes across placenta
A → Airways & secretions
M → Made first
E → Allergy
D → Developing B cells

🩸 HOW TO READ A BMP — Nursing Made Simple! 🩺

A Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) can tell you a lot about what’s happening inside your patient. Don’t just memorise the numbers—understand what they mean! 🧠

💧 Sodium (Na⁺) → Fluid balance & neurological function
❤️ Potassium (K⁺) → Cardiac rhythm & muscle function
🧪 Chloride (Cl⁻) → Fluid & acid–base balance
⚖️ Bicarbonate (HCO₃⁻/CO₂) → Acid–base status
🫘 BUN/Urea + Creatinine → Kidney function & hydration
🍬 Glucose → Blood glucose status
🦴 Calcium → Bone, muscle & cardiac function

🚨 Nursing tip: Pay close attention to abnormal potassium, glucose and calcium, and always compare results with your laboratory’s reference range.

Remember: Don’t treat the number—assess the patient, look at the trend, and connect the results to the clinical picture.
