Do you regard your knowledge of physiotherapy as being pretty good or are you yet to discover all the amazing benefits that physiotherapy can offer you?

It can be surprising what goes on in the human body and physiotherapy can help with many conditions – in fact there is a lot more that we can do for you in physiotherapy than what we can't do.

Dive into the amazing world of physiotherapy and discover how it can help you

Why not surprise yourself with some facts about physiotherapy below. Some you may already be aware of and other facts might come as a surprise. Not only will the facts give you an idea of the range of conditions we can treat, it will also build up a bank of useful physio knowledge – you never know, you might find yourself winning a quiz show one day because of this post! :)

Did you know?

All the chemicals in the human body have a combined value of approx £4

Our body is made up of approximately 20 different elements – Your body is 65% oxygen – yes practically thin air! The human body also contains trace amounts of arsenic too! If a value was to be placed on each element, it would work out at just over £1 – good selling point for poundland, but perhaps not worth selling your body for ;) The most valuable asset your body has is your skin. If you were to treat it as leather, you could tan it and sell it for almost £4!

Can physiotherapy help my skin?

Yes physiotherapy can play a part in improving chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and acne. These are very common skin conditions but can cause social embarrassment and distress to sufferers particularly if the face is affected. A popular treatment is narrow band UVB Radiation treatment which is given over a few weeks and is designed to toughen the skin using UVB rays and protect it against the sensitivity that often sparks episodes of these conditions off.

Physiotherapists can treat migraine

According to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) physiotherapy is becoming increasingly popular for treating headaches in general – not just migraines. The crux of the matter is, you don't need to be in agony to seek treatment from physiotherapy – we're big believers here at Bluebell Physiotherapy in getting effective treatment and getting on with life. Therefore whether you suffer from niggling headaches or suffer from regular migraines that are affecting your day to day life then you would not go wrong booking an appointment at your local CSP Registered physiotherapist.

How does physiotherapy help people with headaches?

Physiotherapy works on the areas that are causing the headaches or migraines in the first place, therefore administering effective treatment. The first thing we establish when you visit us with headaches or migraine is to define if it is a neurological or musculoskeletal condition that are causing them. Following this there are many techniques used to effectively treat headaches and migraines. In some cases they can even go completely following a course of treatment.

Children with Cystic Fibrosis should not mix with each other

As awful as this sounds, it is not recommended that children who have cystic fibrosis play together. This is because of the increased risk of cross infection. Parents of children with cystic fibrosis monitor their children closely for signs of breathing difficulty. Colds and routine bugs found in schools are a particular concern as the condition can be exacerbated by such triggers. However despite this negative outlook, there is a lot physiotherapy can do to help improve the condition and is a very effective option when performed alongside the specialist exercises for sufferers of cystic fibrosis.

How we can help your child

Because cystic fibrosis affects each child differently and their needs can change on a daily basis, physiotherapy treatment plans are variable according to needs. We treat children here at Bluebell Physiotherapy on a daily basis. The physiotherapy session can vary again according to needs and last on average between 15 minutes and 1 hour. It is important that these sessions are maintained through teenage years – we try not to interfere with social life too much! ;)

The expression 'second string' comes from archers who always carried a spare bow string

No we're not about to get all technical on you this time, but rather we thought we would merely point out that a second string might not be any good to an injured archer! Archery is still carried out mainly in hobby form now – thankfully! However a lot of strength is needed to practice the sport and this often takes people by surprise especially if they are not used to the sport and are just trying it out.

We have seen a fair number of patients over the years who come to us with pulled and torn muscles from using a bow! We have often wondered if the medical professionals of long ago used similar techniques to what we use today to get their archers back up and fighting fit again!

What to do if you suspect an injury – sporting or otherwise

In order to help your body protect the injury and start healing itself, remember the RICE technique. Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.

Unfortunately this may mean a weekend sitting on the sofa. You need to use the effected area as little as possible so avoid standing on an injured foot or lifting with an injured hand (I'm sure you get the drift!) If you notice the affected area swelling, use ice on the area to stop it swelling too much. A bag of frozen peas can work just as well! Use pressure to reduce the swelling and keep the body part up as much as possible to drain away excess fluid.

Can we treat your problem?

Hopefully we have given you a small taster into the lesser known facts of physiotherapy, so your next step is to discover for yourself the range of treatments we can offer. From headaches caused by a neurological condition to a bakers cyst in your knee we can help get your life back on track with effective, drug free treatment plans.

To discover more of the problems and conditions we treat on a daily basis here at bluebell, take a visit to our delightful virtual body – we hope you'll agree, it's really rather awesome!

yoga or the gym — which is better? Is there really a question in there?

1. Mind, body and spirit.

Yoga will help tone your body but while it’s doing that, it also helps you to be truly in the moment and infuses your spirit with positive energy. A gym workout is focused primarily on improving your body’s physical condition.

2. Yoga benefits your full body—externally and internally.

The twisting, stretching and folding of a yoga practice are good for the digestive system, the circulatory system, the lymph system and more. It’s a great way to detox the body and can improve your cardiovascular system. And all this while developing stronger muscles. A gym workout is focused just on strengthening muscles and boosting cardio.

3. Yoga teaches acceptance.

Yoga helps you believe you’re perfect the way you are—with your strengths and your weaknesses. It’s true what they say — yoga is not about self-improvement, it’s about self-acceptance. Gym classes, especially boot camp style classes, are more likely to have you feeling like a failure if you can’t do everything.

4. Yoga is about focusing on yourself.

Many yoga studios don’t even have mirrors so you’re forced to think about where your body is and what each muscle and limb is doing, whereas gym classes have mirrors for you to see—and worry about—what everyone else is doing.

5. Yoga will make you lean.

By stretching your muscles as you’re strengthening them, your body will take on a leaner appearance. A gym workout filled with weights will cause your muscles to bulk up.

6. Yoga is more efficient.

Yoga relies on your own—your entire body—for strengthening. Gym classes use weights and other equipment. Through different asanas, your full body becomes toned and stronger by using your own entire body weight as ‘weights’. By using only weights or other equipment, muscles are isolated and have to be worked individually in order to benefit, which takes a whole lot more time.

7. You can do yoga anywhere.

Yoga is a different experience in a yoga studio, but you can easily practice yoga at home, outside or in small spaces. All you need is about 6 feet by 4 feet and you have your own yoga studio. A gym workout requires more equipment and more space.

8. Yoga is kinder to the body.

This does not mean yoga is not intense. Just ask anyone who practices Ashtanga. Yoga builds heat and works your muscles, but you’re doing what your body allows you to do and not attempting to lift weights and pound on the joints—both of which can cause injury. Yoga also stretches as you move through the postures and a good yoga practice builds on itself to prepare the body for the next position.

9. Yoga eases your aches and pains.

A gym workout increases them. Yoga slowly stretches muscles and opens the energy channels of the body. The increased flexibility keeps muscles and joints lubricated and healthy. Weights and treadmill can cause strain which leads to soreness and injuries.

10. Yoga helps you breathe easier.

During times of stress, it’s easy to forget to breathe—really breathe, and not just shallow breaths. Without deep breaths, it’s harder to think clearly and fatigue can set in. Yoga focuses on the breath so that when you need it most, those deep breaths are the norm.

11. Yoga is calming.

We move through practice with a calm, relaxed expression. No grunting, no dropping weights, no clenched teeth or grimacing expressions like you see from gym-goers. The overall intention is to release tension throughout the body and mind.

12. Yoga reduces stress.

Many yoga classes include meditation, or at least Savasana. It gives you a chance to clear the mind of the stresses of the day. With practice, stressful situations can be dealt with more easily and overall stress levels decrease. The competitive nature of a gym along with the loud music and bright lights is more likely to increase your stress.

13. Everyone can practice yoga.

No matter your age or your health, you can practice yoga. Yoga has even been found to help people who have health ailments ranging from Parkinson’s to cancer. Gym workouts, in general, are not designed to be therapeutic, or senior-friendly.

14. Yoga improves concentration.

During a yoga practice, you focus on the breath, the posture and the gaze. Outside distractions are tuned out. While you can try and do this at the gym, this focus and silence is not exactly encouraged with all the other distractions around, like loud music, TVs, etc.

15. Yogis rock.

We’re a happy bunch! Wouldn’t you rather be around smiling, happy people? You’ll get to be in an environment where people accept your, and everyone else’s, curves and edges. There’s no talk of who held what pose longer, no sense of competition. It’s always good vibes all around!
