The National Eye Bank of Sri Lanka (NEBSL) established under a directive of His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapaksa aiming to play a significant role in alleviation of corneal blindness in Sri Lanka and throughout the World.

The National Eye Bank is a result of the official alliance between Sri Lanka and Singapore Governments and sited in Colombo National Eye Hospital. HE the President who first embraced the collaboration between the Singapore Eye Bank, Colombo National Eye Hospital and the Ministry of Health with great enthusiasm and has most graciously provided full Government support and direction allowing Sri Lanka to reemerge as a forefront Eye bank in Asia.

The NEBSL is responsible for the Procurement of corneas from the local donors, process and distribution of Cornea Tissues of the highest quality for transplantation.

To be among the best eye banks in the world providing super quality Cornea Tissues for Transplantations.

Mission -
Procure, Process and Distribution of corneal tissues for transplantation, research and education adhering to medical standards and higher quality standards in alleviating corneal blindness.

Objectives -
To eliminate the Corneal blindness by providing adequate tissues of good quality in Sri Lanka and to play a similar role in Asia.

To provide high quality, cost effective corneas for transplantations.

To provide fastest service in supplying high quality Cornea Tissues for transplantation.

Ensure high quality corneas by proper testing and care.

Enhance public awareness of the need for eye donation.

The Sri Lanka National Eye Bank is a pride of the entire Asian region since no other Eye Bank in the world supplies or transplants corneas free of charge to the public, said former Indian President and famous scientist Dr Abdul Kalam who is on a brief visit to Sri Lanka.

He observed that corneas donated by the Sri Lankan community with the intention to earn merit are being provided free to Sri Lankans but even to foreign countries when the need arises.

Dr. Kalam noted that even though he had seen high tech modern eye banks elsewhere in the world, National Eye Bank in Sri Lanka was the best of all, due to its noble service.

Feb 24, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa this afternoon declared open the first National Eye Bank constructed at a cost of 300 million rupees at the National Eye Hospital premises.

The construction of the hospital was funded by the Lee Foundation of Singapore through Asia Cornea Foundation and Singapore National Eye Centre with the cooperation of the Sri Lankan government.

The main objective of the Eye Bank is to provide corneas with high standard to local hospitals as well as to foreign hospitals.

The President also inspected the laboratory of the Eye Bank and had cordial discussions with the patients in the hospital.

The Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena participating at this function has said the opening of the eye bank is an important threshold in the health sector of Sri Lanka. The Minister also has pointed out the importance of proper management of the resources of the health sector.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa presented a memento to the Director of Singapore National Eye Centre Professor Donald Tan for his support.

Deputy Minister Lalith Dissanayake, MP Thilanga Sumathipala, Secretary of Health Dr. Ravindra Ruberu, Director of General Hospital Dr. Hector Weerasinghe, Eye Surgeon Dr. Charith Fonseka and the doctors and the staff of the Eye Hospital were also present.
