The Headache That Would Not Go”
Old Ma Miatta was known in her community outside Monrovia for one thing — strength.
Even at 62, she sold pepper and dry fish in the market every day. Rain or sun, she was there.
But for months, she complained of one small thing.
“Just headache,” she would say, pressing her temple.
“It will pass.”
Her daughter suggested visiting the clinic.
Ma Miatta refused.
“It’s only stress. I have lived long.”
The headaches became frequent. Then came dizziness. One afternoon in the market, her vision blurred. The ground felt like it was moving. She almost fell.
That day, her nephew forced her to the clinic.
The nurse checked her blood pressure.
180/110.
Severely high.
Ma Miatta stared at the numbers.
“But I only have headache,” she whispered.
The nurse replied gently,
“High blood pressure is called the silent killer because it speaks softly… until it shouts.”
Ma Miatta had never checked her blood pressure before. She didn’t know that:
• Too much salt in her food
• Constant stress
• Little rest
• No medical checkups
…had been quietly damaging her heart.
With medication, reduced salt intake, regular monitoring, and simple daily walks, her pressure slowly improved.
Months later, she returned to the same market — but different.
Now, whenever someone complained of “just headache,” she would say:
“Please check your pressure. It might not be ordinary.”
