🔴 Breaking News: Over 600 SPLA-IO Fighters Defect to SSPDF

Juba, April 2, 2025 — Brigadier General Gabriel Bol Anuer, along with more than 600 soldiers from the Sudan People’s Liberation Army-In Opposition (SPLA-IO), have defected to the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF). The defections took place today across multiple locations, including Panyier, Lologo, Rejaf training centres, and Gutmakur.

Brig. Gen. Anuer cited dissatisfaction with the SPLA-IO’s leadership as the primary reason for the defection. He emphasized a commitment to peace and unity in South Sudan and pledged loyalty to President Salva Kiir Mayardit.

David John Kumuri, spokesman for South Sudan’s National Security Service (NSS), confirmed the defection of 604 SPLA-IO personnel and stressed the importance of their reintegration into the SSPDF for national stability.

This marks the third such defection announced by the NSS since tensions escalated following clashes in Nasir last month. The move comes amid growing political uncertainty, including the recent house arrest of SPLM/A-IO leader and First Vice-President Riek Machar.

Analysts suggest these defections could weaken the opposition SPLA-IO while strengthening President Kiir’s control over the military. The 2018 peace agreement between President Kiir and First Vice President Machar continues to face challenges due to delayed security reforms and political disputes.
