DR MACHAR’S BODYGUARD PASSES AWAY IN MILITARY DETENTION - HIS FAMILY CONFIRMS

Captain Luka Gathok Nyuon, a close bodyguard of suspended First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar, has died in military detention in Juba, family members confirmed on Thursday afternoon.

Nyuon, a native of Mayom County in his 40s, was arrested in March after Machar was placed under house arrest and had been held at Jamus military detention center. His family said they were informed of his death but have not been allowed to view or collect the body, which remains at the military hospital mortuary in Giyada.

Relatives and SPLM-IO officials suspect his death was torture and are demanding an independent investigation. “The government body that arrested him must ensure a transparent probe into why he died in custody and was denied treatment,” a family member said.

SPLM-IO’s Alfred Gatmai confirmed the death, alleging Nyuon was tortured to force him to denounce Machar. He said about 80 of Machar’s bodyguards remain detained.

Voice of Juba’s attempts to reach SSPDF spokesperson Maj. Gen. L*l Ruai Koang for comment were unsuccessful.

Nyuon’s death comes amid rising tensions after President Salva Kiir suspended Machar last week and referred him to court on treason and crimes ag*inst humanity charges.
