Here’s something I’ve been meaning to talk about for a very long time — Beauty standards of Maldives and the things that are not considered conventionally beautiful like Curly Hair / Dark Skin / Curvy Bodies.

As a hair stylist; my main concern being hair — I’ve personally met so many parents who hated their child’s curly hair; often asking me to straighten them chemically from a very young age!

I want to highlight that it happens when they’re young; growing up with this narrative; they grow up hating their curly hair as well.

Preferring straight hair is not the issue; but hating on curly hair or calling it ugly. Words like “haamundi” etc. This is not okay.

Maybe your beauty standards aren’t aligned with it; but hear this loud and clear — CURLY HAIR IS BEAUTIFUL TOO.

Natural browns with a hint of golden highlights is the most sought after look.
