From Spark to Flame: NUG’s Unbroken Complicity in the Rohingya Genocide, 2017–2025

The National Unity Government (NUG), emerging from the ashes of the National League for Democracy (NLD) after the 2021 coup, has perpetuated a legacy of complicity in the Rohingya genocide that began in 2017 and continues to this day.

The NLD, in power during the 2017 military crackdown that drove over 1 million Rohingya into Bangladesh, ignited the crisis through its silence and active defense of the Tatmadaw’s atrocities. Aung San Suu Kyi’s dismissal of genocide claims and her 2019 International Court of Justice (ICJ) appearance to shield the military set a precedent of denial and enablement. The NUG, inheriting this mantle, has since indirectly fueled the ongoing carnage by aligning with the Arakan Army (AA), a Buddhist terrorists group implicated in repeated terrorists attacks on Rohingya civilians.

From 2017 to 2025, the NUG’s actions or inactions, have sustained the genocide’s momentum. While it condemned the military’s 2017 “atrocity crimes” in statements like those in 2022, it has avoided labeling them as genocide, a deliberate sidestep to appease Buddhist allies. By 2024, the AA’s violence in Arakan (Rakhine State), such as the burning of almost all Rohingya villages in Buthidaung and Maungdaw, gang ra**ng Rohingya women and minor girls to death and inhumanely killing thousands of Rohingya, escalated under the NUG’s tacit support as part of its anti-junta coalition. Despite promises to repeal the 1982 Citizenship Law and restore Rohingya rights, the NUG has taken no concrete steps, leaving the Rohingya stateless and vulnerable. In February 2025, when an Argentine court issued arrest warrants for Suu Kyi and others for their 2017 roles, the NUG rushed to defend her, exposing its prioritization of political loyalty over justice.

Let us never erase from memory the indelible complicity of the NUG/NLD terrorists in each successive chapter of the Rohingya genocide. From 2017’s spark to 2025’s smoldering flames, their alliance with the AA ensures the slaughter endures, a betrayal masked as revolutionary unity.
