THE BOY WHO DIDN'T GREET

One Monday morning, 10-year-old Felix walked into school.

His teacher smiled, “Good morning, Felix.”

Felix walked past her without a word.

“Felix, didn't you hear me?” the teacher called gently.

He shrugged. “Yes, ma.”

“Then why didn't you greet?”

“My mummy said I should only greet people I know,” he replied.

The teacher smiled and said nothing.

Weeks later, the school organized a special programme. A distinguished visitor came. He stood at the entrance, watching the children walk into the hall.

“Good morning, young man,” he said to Felix with a smile.

Felix kept walking.

The boy behind him stopped, “Good morning, sir. You are welcome to our school.”

The visitor smiled warmly at him.

After the programme, the visitor called the Head Teacher aside.

“I've been observing the children,” he said. “That respectful boy who greeted me — I would like to support his education through secondary school. I am looking for a child with good character, not just good grades.”

Felix was standing nearby. He heard everything.

In that moment, he remembered all the times his parents had told him, “Felix, greet your elders. Greet people when you see them.” He had always ignored them.

That evening, he ran to his mother.

“Mummy, please teach me how to greet properly. I don't want to miss another opportunity because I lacked respect.”

His mother hugged him and said, “My son, greeting is not just words. It is respect, humility, and good home training.”

From that day, Felix changed.

He greeted his parents every morning. He greeted his teachers, visitors, neighbours, even his classmates. Gradually, greeting became part of him.

Dear Parents,

Don't assume your child will automatically learn manners from society. Teach them. Remind them. Correct them. Show them.

When your child walks past an adult without greeting, don't say “Leave him, he is still small.”

Call him back gently: “Go back and greet properly.”
