7-Step guide on how to make stubborn natural hair soft

1. Pre-poo:
Apply a lightweight oil, (coconut, olive, or jojoba) or conditioner to dry hair 20–30 minutes before washing. This protects hair and makes detangling easier.

2. Gentle cleanse:
Use a mild or sulfate-free shampoo or only wash as needed (avoid over-washing) to keep natural oils.

3. Detangle carefully:
Detangle in sections with a wide-tooth comb or fingers while hair is conditioned. Start from the ends and work up.

4. Condition every wash:
Always follow shampoo with a good rinse-out conditioner to restore moisture.

5. Moisturize regularly:
Spray water or a leave-in daily or every other day, then seal with a light oil or cream. Softness comes from moisture, keep hair hydrated.

6. Deep condition/steam monthly
Give your hair one monthly steam or intensive deep-conditioning treatment to pe*****te the cuticle and rebuild softness.

7. Protect at night & be gentle, sleep with a satin bonnet or pillowcase, avoid tight braids, and stop harsh combing or tugging.

Try these 5 simple steps to moisturize your natural hair.

My sister, 4C hair na real lover of moisture. The more you feed it, the softer, juicier, and healthier it becomes. No magic, just moisture.

Try this simple routine:

1. Start with water. Lightly spray water or use a water-based leave-in to wake the hair up. 4C hair drinks water like person wey dey thirsty.

2. Add your moisturizing cream. This is what gives the hair that softness and bounce.

3. Seal it in. Use your hair butter or oil to lock all that goodness inside so it won’t disappear.

4. Twist or braid lightly. This helps the moisture stay longer and keeps the hair stretched.

5. Do this 3–4 times a week, or as your hair needs. Some hair drinks more than others, so listen to your own.

Because honestly? Moisture is life for 4C hair. Treat it well and watch it shine.

How to Properly Detangle Your Natural Hair.

My sister, detangling your hair is not
wrestling ooo.

You’re not dragging the hair like you’re fighting with somebody, you’re simply gently opening it up so it can breathe and stay healthy.

See the easiest way to do it:

✨ Start when your hair is damp, not dry. Dry hair will just snap anyhow.

✨ Add something slippery, it could be your leave-in, conditioner, or a good detangling cream. Let the hair soften first.

✨ Use your fingers to separate the big knots. Fingers are gentler than any comb.

✨ Then carry your wide-tooth comb and start from the tips, gently moving up to the roots.

✨ No rush. If you hurry, the hair will pay you back with breakage.

When you treat your hair with patience ehn, you will see how it will start behaving and even thanking you with softness and length.

Take it easy, enjoy the process. Your hair deserves a tender love.

Which of these mistakes are you guilty of, and which one are you ready to fix first?

Why Your Hair Isn’t Growing
(Let’s Talk About It)

Sometimes your hair is actually growing, but the problem is this, the ends keep breaking, so you don’t see the length. Let’s look at a few simple mistakes many of us make without even knowing:

✨ 1. Not moisturizing often enough:
Hair needs moisture just like your skin. When it’s dry, it snaps. A little water + leave-in conditioner can change everything.

✨ 2. Braids that are too tight:
If your braids pull your edges or give you a headache, they’re too tight. Your scalp should never feel like it’s fighting for its life.

✨ 3. Not washing or caring for the scalp:
Your scalp is the “soil” where your hair grows. If it’s dirty, clogged, or itchy, your hair won’t thrive. Clean scalp = happy hair.

✨ 4. Using too much heat
Constant blow-drying, straightening, and curling irons can weaken your hair. Use heat only when necessary, and always protect it.

✨ 5. Ignoring split ends
Split ends don’t fix themselves. Left alone, they travel up the strand and cause more breakage. A trim every few months helps your hair stay healthy.

✨ 6. Sleeping without a satin bonnet
Cotton pillowcases pull out moisture and cause friction. A satin bonnet or scarf keeps your hair smooth and protected overnight.

Which of these mistakes are you guilty of, and which one are you ready to fix first?

Let’s Talk About Shedding and Breakage

You know, a lot of us panic the moment we see hair on the floor or in our comb.

But honestly, shedding is very common. Everybody sheds hair, even people with the healthiest, fullest hair. On average, we lose about 50–100 strands a day, and it’s completely normal.

One way to know it’s shedding is that you’ll see a tiny white bulb at the end of the strand. That bulb is simply your scalp saying, “Okay, this one don do its work, time for a fresh one.”

And why do we shed?
Sometimes it’s just the natural hair cycle.

Sometimes it’s because we carried a protective style for long, so when we loosen it, all the trapped shed hairs will come out at once.

Sometimes stress or small hormonal changes can increase it.

Even weather can cause a little extra shedding.

But breakage is different o!
Breakage is when the hair cuts in the middle — no bulb, just small scattered pieces. That one usually comes from dryness, rough handling, or hairstyles that are just too tight.

To keep breakage from stressing your hair:

✨ Moisturize often

✨ Handle your hair gently, especially when detangling

✨ Avoid tight hairstyles that pull your strands

Once you know the difference between shedding and breakage, you’ll stop fearing every hair that falls… and start focusing on keeping your hair healthy and happy.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU WASH YOUR HAIR?

This is one question many ladies with African/Natural hair ask:

“How often should I wash my hair?”

The truth is simple — there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

Our hair, scalp, lifestyle, and even weather conditions are different.

Here’s a simple guide to help you:

💛 1. Wash your hair when it needs it.

Don’t wait too long, and don’t overdo it. Listen to your scalp.

💛 2. For most people:

Once a week or

Once every two weeks
…is perfectly fine.

💛 3. If you sweat a lot or your scalp gets oily easily:

Weekly washing is best.
Hot weather can also make your scalp dirtier faster.

💛 4. If your lifestyle is less active:

Once in two weeks can work well.

💛 5. What you should avoid:

❌ Washing once in 2 months
❌ Once in 3 months
❌ 6 months or even a whole year
This leads to build-up, dandruff, smell, dry hair, and breakage.

💛 6. And please… always moisturize/condition!

Shampoo opens the hair cuticle.
A good moisturizer/conditioner closes it, softens the hair, and keeps it healthy.
Your hair will thank you every time.

Find a wash routine that works for YOU.
Consistency is what matters, not copying another person’s routine.

What Makes Afro Hair Dry?

Our African afro hair gets dry very easily, and it’s not because our hair is stubborn.

It’s just how our hair grows.

Our scalp produces oil, but the oil doesn’t travel down the strands (hair) quickly because the hair is curly.

Other things that make it dry include:

Harsh shampoos

Not moisturizing often

Weather (especially harmattan)

Too much heat styling

But a little more care and moisture can change everything.

Understanding Your Hair Type

African afro-textured hair falls under Type 4 hair, and it is beautifully unique. Within Type 4, we have three main sub-types, 4A, 4B, and 4C. Each one behaves differently, and knowing your type helps you care for your hair better.

Type 4A Hair is soft, springy coils with a clearly visible curl pattern. It loves moisture and responds well to curl creams and gels.

Type 4B Hair has a “Z-shaped” bend rather than curls. It’s fluffy, less defined, and needs regular moisture to stay soft and manageable.

Type 4C Hair has Tight, densely packed coils with the highest shrinkage (sometimes up to 70%). It’s full, beautiful, and needs deep moisture, gentle handling, and protective styles.

Why is this understanding very important:
Knowing your hair type helps you understand how much moisture, styling, and care your hair needs so you can choose the right products and routine.

WHAT IS NATURAL HAIR?

Before we talk about natural hair, let’s start with something every woman with Afro-textured hair needs to know:

Your hair is not stubborn.
Your hair is not difficult.
Your hair only needs understanding.

For many of us, nobody taught us how our hair actually works. We grew up hearing things like

My hair is too strong,

I don’t have good hair,

My hair doesn’t grow.

Those words shaped how we see our hair today.

But here is the truth:
Every strand of Afro hair is beautifully created with purpose, pattern, and potential.
Once you understand it, caring for it becomes easier - and even enjoyable.

So let’s start from the very beginning:

What Is Natural Hair?

Natural hair simply means your hair in its original state.
No relaxer, no texturiser, no chemicals that change how it grows.
Just your God-given coils, curls, or kinks, exactly as they are.

Natural hair is unique, expressive, versatile, and full of life.
And when you learn how it behaves, how it loves moisture, how it shrinks, how it stretches, how it responds to products, you’ll see that your hair is not a problem to fix but a crown to understand.
