CONUA MEET IN UNIBEN, ORDERS MEMBERS TO RESUME 5/10/2022!

RESOLUTION OF CONGRESS
Congress of Nigerian Universities Academics(CONUA) held an emergency meeting today 4th October, 2022 at the uniben sports complex car park between 3 and 4.30pm and unanimously resolved that:

1. Members should resume work unfailingly Today Wednesday 5th October, 2022.

2. Any attack, physical or verbal by any member(s) of the striking asuu should be promptly reported to the university management.

3. Members should commence teaching and project supervision immediately.

4. Members were briefed and assured that march, April and May salaries will be paid along October salary while June, July, August and September salaries will be paid with November salary.

5. Members were further informed that the IPPIS payment platform has been modified to accommodate all academic earned allowances.

6. Members expressed appreciation to the federal government for the recognition and registration of our great, dynamic and responsible union.

The news that UMYU will start medicine this year was rapturously welcome in all quarters of Katsina State. However, not many of us care to ask how we arrive this great moment.

From 2010 to 2013, ASUU lobbied, pressed and engaged the government to release revitalisation funding as contained in the FGN-ASUU 2009 Agreement but it refused. By mid-2013, ASUU went on strike to pressure the Jonathan Government to honour this agreement.

ASUU-UMYU joined strike. Shema Government withheld members' salaries for two months. In the end, President Jonathan approved the payment of 220 billion to revitalise the public universities.

From that money, UMYU got about N2billion. Part of that money was used to build the Faculty of Medicine of UMYU from scratch to completion. Katsina State Government provided NOTHING for the construction of that Faculty. More lecture rooms were constructed with that money across existing faculties.

Money from TETFUND was used in training academic staff, mostly overseas, who would teach students in the new faculty of medicine. The Katsina State Government provided NOTHING in this training program.

ASUU-UMYU was never on strike on solidarity grounds. UMYU has always been a beneficiary of ASUU struggles.
