THE POOR MAN AND THE RICH MAN — A LESSON FROM LAGOS
There was once a young man who came to Lagos with almost nothing.
He looked around and saw wealthy people driving expensive cars, living in beautiful houses and running big businesses. He became discouraged and said:
“These people were lucky. I can never become like them.”
But another man looked at the same Lagos and said:
“If someone has built something here, then there must be a lesson I can learn.”
One real example is S.O. Babalola, who came to Lagos in 1955 from a modest background with only one pound and ten shillings from his parents. He eventually became a successful businessman and founded Telemobile Nigeria Limited.

Another Lagos story is Razaq Okoya. He was born in Lagos and had very little formal education—his schooling ended at primary school. He began his working life in tailoring and later built the Eleganza business empire.

And there is an important lesson here:
The difference between a person who has little and a person who eventually builds wealth is not always where they started. Sometimes it is what they do with what they have.
The poor man may receive ₦10,000 and spend everything.
Another person may receive the same ₦10,000, eat with part of it, learn with part of it, start a small trade with part of it, and gradually build something.
Lagos teaches this lesson every day:
One person sees traffic. Another sees customers.
One sees an empty piece of land. Another sees opportunity.
One sees ₦5,000 as money to finish today. Another sees it as the beginning of tomorrow.
But remember: not every rich person started poor, and poverty is not simply caused by laziness. Family wealth, education, opportunity, connections, economic conditions and luck can all make a difference. Dangote, for example, became extremely wealthy, but he was born into a prominent and wealthy business family, so his story should not be presented as “a poor boy who became rich.”

The real lesson is this: Don't eat every seed simply because you are hungry today. Some seeds are meant to become tomorrow's harvest.

THE TWO PEOPLE WHO SAW THE SAME FUTURE
There were two men who received the same opportunity.
The first man said, “Life is too short. Let me enjoy today.”
Whenever money came into his hands, he spent it immediately. New clothes, food, drinks, enjoyment and things that gave him temporary happiness.
The second man also loved enjoyment, but he understood something different. He said, “I can enjoy a little today, but I must also build something for tomorrow.”
So while the first man was eating everything he received, the second man was saving little by little. He bought tools. He learned skills. He invested in his work. He built his small business one step at a time.
Years passed.
The first man still had beautiful memories of what he had eaten and enjoyed—but nothing to show for the years that had passed.
The second man was not rich overnight. But his small savings had become something bigger. His skills had become valuable. His little business had become a source of income. What he built began to feed him and his family.
Then the first man asked:
“How did you become successful?”
The second man replied:
“We were both eating from today's harvest. You ate yours completely. I ate mine and planted some of it.”
That is the difference between consuming your future and building your future.
Don't spend everything just because you have it today.
Eat some. Save some. Learn something. Build something.
Because tomorrow does not come with a warning.
