๐ณ๐ฌ Nigerian Inmate Dies in Ethiopian Prison Amid Allegations of Neglect
A Nigerian inmate, identified as Dennis Smith Okoro, has reportedly died at Kaliti Prison, a maximum-security facility in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Okoro, who hailed from Abia State, was said to be among approximately 300 Nigerians incarcerated at the facility. His death reportedly occurred during the week, months after concerns were raised about his deteriorating health.
According to fellow inmates, Okoro developed a kidney-related illness while in custody but allegedly did not receive adequate medical attention. They claim that funds were raised and handed over to prison authorities to facilitate his treatment, yet he was not taken to the hospital.
Inmates also alleged that attempts to reach the Nigerian Embassy in Ethiopia regarding his condition did not receive a timely response. As of the time of reporting, his body reportedly remains at the facility, with no official communication from Nigerian authorities.
Okoroโs death adds to previous reported fatalities involving Nigerian inmates at the same prison. In 2023, two Nigerians โ Chizoba Eze and Uchenna Nwannememe โ reportedly died under controversial circumstances. In 2025, another inmate, Basil Ilobi Lawrence from Delta State, also reportedly died while in custody.
More updates will follow as the situation develops.
