*SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO CHIEF NATHANIEL OLADAYO ADEBOWALE, DSSNA, MIMC*
*1948 – 2026*
Born on 25th December 1948 in Ìjìgbẹ́ village, Ado-Odo, he hailed from the Irelu family section of the Aina Afonka Ruling House, Oko-Afọ́, Ìlogbò, and the Amosun lineage of Iloro, Ado-Odo.
The Otun Mayegun Alaafin of Oyo attended Isasegbon Memorial School, Agege, from 1955 to 1961, and Iganmode Grammar School, Ota, from 1963 to 1969.
He pursued tertiary education in Brussels, Belgium, between 1973 and 1981, and at the University of Ibadan from 1984 to 1987.
Professor Nathaniel Oladayo Adebowale was a man of outstanding accomplishments. A Belgian-trained artist, he made significant contributions to the world of arts and culture. His academic career was equally distinguished. He lectured at St. Andrew’s College of Education, Oyo; Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu; and Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Oto-Ijanikin, Lagos State, where he rose to the position of Deputy Provost before retiring in 2013.
His leadership extended beyond academia. In 1995, he became the pioneer Chairman of the Central Working Committee for the Alamuwa Day Celebrations, an initiative that spurred remarkable development across the Ado-Odo kingdom until 2002.
Professor Adebowale also served as Vice Chancellor of the African American University (USA/India), an international open university in Porto-Novo, Republic of Benin. His linguistic skills, community leadership, and scholarly expertise in arts and culture marked him as a true polymath.
His leadership left an indelible mark on the Ado-Odo community. His contributions included giving hope to the downtrodden, spearheading a cultural renaissance, designing the community’s logo, and leading the team that composed its anthem. His courage was exemplified by a historic mission to Ṣọki-Ẹrẹ to propagate the significance of Alamuwa Day and mobilize rural communities. Upon arrival, he and his entourage were confronted by angry youths brandishing weapons. A timely intervention by a classmate from his secondary school days diffused the tension and spared his life — a testament to his bravery and unwavering commitment to his people.
An active footballer in his youth, he later served as Secretary Steward, Board of General Registered Trustees, UAMC Organisation Worldwide; Baba Ìjọ of the United African Methodist Church (UAMC), Ado-Odo; and as a distinguished member of the Awori Resource Group (ARG), Awori Laa, Board of Trustees of the Awori Welfare Association of Nigeria (AWAN), member of the Advisory Council, Awori Cultural Festival, and Vice Chairman of the Ado-Awori Elders Council. His uncommon love for Ado-Odo was further reflected in his construction of a hall named after the legendary Ìgbíọrà drums, realizing his vision of a social centre to serve as a museum of artifacts for tourism in Ado-Odo.
Among other appointments and honours, he served as Board Member, Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, 2007–2013; Chairman, Awori Cultural Heritage, AWAN Committee on Lagos State at 50; President, Ologe Group of International Artists, West Coast of Africa; and Member, Board of Trustees, Gateway Polytechnic, Igbesa. In recognition of his selfless service, he received the Community Service Award from the Aladomoro Progressive Movement, Olorunda Chapter, Lagos State, in 2014, and the Achievers Award from the Ado-Odo Development Foundation (ADF) in 2016.
A devoted family man, happily married and blessed with children, he transitioned to the great beyond on 11th April 2026 after a brief illness.
